Lewis Helfenbein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 23, 2017.

Lee was born January 19, 1960 in Clinton Oklahoma to Alma Nell Armstrong-Helfenbein and Lewis Helfenbein. The family moved to Amarillo in 1961 and Lee lived the remainder of his life in Amarillo.

Being born legally blind, Lee was fiercely independent and able to live a full, active life. He was a skilled handyman, able to make intricate engine repairs. Music was a big part of Lee's life. He possessed a keen ear with perfect pitch and could tune a guitar or tell if a stereo turntable timing was out of sync.

He was a ready volunteer to friends of Bill Wilson and had recently celebrated 24 years in that fellowship. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his mother Nell Helfenbein, his father Lewis Helfenbein and wife Wynona, a daughter Candace Hunt, a son, James Helfenbein, sisters Kim Helfenbein, Brenda Cranford and husband Troy, and son Ryan, grandchildren, Erik Helfenbein, Kolton Hunt and Darcelene Helfenbein and his four legged girls Maranda and Serenity.

I remember Lee reciting "How It Works" from memory. I was so moved by that - it gave it more meaning for me. I didn't know him well, but he always remembered my name and was generous with his hugs. He will certainly be missed - he made the world a better place.

My heart is saddened by your loss. It's a long journey. It will be 12 years in October since Nicole left my presence. I have gone from difficulty breathing and feeling my heart physically contract to the feeling she is just in the other room and I just have to listen with my heart. The journey was led by God. He will lead you. Everyone is different, even each of you. Just stay in the moment and do what is in front of you. He will lead you through the sadness, tears, disbelief, aloneness...... Grief is a healing process.
