Bettie Barksdale was a long-time friend of my mother, Connie Cox of South Boston. Bettie was in Mom's Bible Study back in the 80's and maybe a member of First Pres in SoBo. I seem to recall that Bettie was also a house mother at HARGRAVE MILITARY ACADEMY. Mom asked Bettie once why she never married:
I had several proposals, she responded. Then she added what was to be a world-famous Connie-ism, a quote oft passed on by Mom:
I didn't know that the last time was going to be the last time. How many times have I quoted Bettie? Bettie, you'll always be remembered for that! And my Mom thought the world of her.
