While she was still a teenager Margaret Mary in her interaction with my children was the template for what you wish an aunt to be. They loved her,as did the entire extended family. She pitched into help in every possible way with a grin and a humorous jibe. This never changed as she grew, married, and had children and grandchildren of her own. She was a unique and treasured cog in the family which will be sorely missed.

Margaret Mary was my Godmother and aunt. But she was much more than that. She was an adult with the youngest of hearts. She, and uncle Jim and family, would regularly open their home - and Cape Cod - to the extended family. While we vacationed each summer at Westport, there were always reciprocal side trips to Cape Cod where the cousins would explore Lake Wequaquet, Hyannis, PTown and the Islands. Margaret Mary was a great cook, always gracing family events with Irish soda bread and other delicacies. And Margaret Mary was patient with the mind of an educator. I recall a tour of the woods once, where Margaret Mary pursued and found a rare native orchid, the lady slipper, for a botanical lesson. Sailing and canoeing were more fun when our mistakes were seized as fodder for one of her many ribbings. She just had a knack for observing and commenting on life's many foibles and idiosyncrasies. Joking was a hallmark.

For these many reasons family summer cottage rentals on the Cape replaced Westport and we all came to know and love Cape Cod through MM's eyes. Margaret Mary, or Um, taught us much. She remains dear to our hearts, her lessons in life a part of the family and each one of us. And we are better for having her on earth for so many years.

My feelings are a combination of great sadness and relief since learning of the passing of my aunt, Margaret Mary McCann Driscoll. She was a generous, fun, loving, wise-cracking, energetic, stubborn, strong, sweet, devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend who did not deserve the hands she was dealt in her later years. We all loved her very much. Rest in peace, Auntie Um. We are all richer for having had you in our lives.
