Herbert Sosbee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 10, 2017.

HORRELL HILL - Herbert Daniel “Danny” Sosbee, Sr., died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, July 9, 2017. Born in Watkinsville, Ga., on November 13, 1927, Danny was the youngest of six children born to James Earl and Ellie Lee Brooks Sosbee.

At age 18, Danny joined the U.S. Army on January 4, 1946. After basic training and several years at Ft. Jackson, Danny was stationed in Japan just before war broke out in Korea. Sergeant Sosbee was sent to the frontline as a chief of howitzer section of a direct support field artillery battery. He distinguished himself in action against the enemy near Andong, Korea, on July 25, 1950, by carrying, with assistance from his battery aid man, three seriously wounded men of his section to safety over a distance of 600 yards. For this courageous action, Sgt. Sosbee was nominated for the Silver Star. Before leaving Korea, he was promoted to Master Sergeant at the young age of 23. Danny loved the military, often saying it changed his life, and was very proud of his 20 years of distinguished service.

Upon retirement, he moved his family to Horrell Hill in Lower Richland County. Danny worked at Ft. Jackson as a barber during the Viet Nam War, often cutting the hair of as many as 200-300 recruits per day. In the evenings, he worked in his own barber shop at Horrell Hill. He loved being a barber, especially the social aspect of it. He became lifelong friends with a lot of his customers, including many from McEntire Army/ANG Base. Danny continued cutting hair in his shop until declining health required him to stop at the age of 88. In his free time, Danny loved to read, do Sudoku, fish, camp, and play pinochle.

In 1967, Danny joined Beulah Baptist Church. As a devoted member of the church, he taught for 23 years in the John Motley, Sr., Sunday school class; served as vice chair of the Deacon Board; chaired the Cemetery Committee, the Ushers, and the BBQ Committee; and was the General Board Representative to the Southern Baptist Convention. Danny was also a Master Mason of the Eastover Masonic Lodge 406.

Danny Sosbee was a good man, a kind man. He never spoke ill of anyone, and taught his children and grandchildren that if you can say nothing good about a person, do not say anything at all. He was a happy man, an optimistic man, and always had a smile on his face. He will be greatly missed, but the memories of the tremendous joy he brought to our lives will always make us smile.

In addition to his parents and siblings, Danny was predeceased by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Ruth Brooks Sosbee. He is survived by his loyal and loving wife of 11 years, Barbara Motley; his daughter, Linda (Warner Montgomery); son, Danny Sosbee, Jr. (Sharon); his daughter, Donna Sosbee; grandchildren, Trey Sosbee (Margie), Chad Sosbee, Daniel Sosbee, and Megan Keaton (Tyler); great-grandchildren, Madison Sosbee, Cameron Sosbee, Payton Sosbee, Grayson Sosbee, and Sophia Keaton; brother-in-law, Mason Brooks (Priscilla); stepsons, John Motley, Sr. (Martha) and Robert Motley (Linda) and their families, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Martin Hester of South Hampton Family Practice; and Dr. Reid Tribble, Dr. Barry Feldman, and the staff of Palmetto Richland Heart Hospital for their expert, kind, and tender care of Danny. In addition, our heartfelt thanks goes out to the caretakers of Home Instead Senior Care, especially Nicole Wright whose sweet kindness and devoted attention were a help and comfort not only to Danny, but also to the family.

Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Beulah Baptist Church, 9487 Garners Ferry Road, with burial in the church cemetery.

Danny’s wish was for his pallbearers to be the deacons of Beulah Baptist Church and for honorary pallbearers to be the members of his Sunday school class. In addition, he wanted to invite “anyone who was a Mason, served in the military, or ‘whose hair I ever cut,’” to be an honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church Building Fund, 9487 Garners Ferry Road, Hopkins, SC 29061.

Danny was my barber, and my friend for more than 20 years. Although I retired to Camden 13 years ago, I still trekked to Horrell Hill for my haircuts until Danny retired (Again) He will be greatly missed by his customers and friends. Larry Robb

I will truly miss my favorite barber and brother mason. I will always remember that Danny and my father found out that they left Korea on the same ship and got to know each other 50 years later.

Mr. Sosbee cut my Dad's hair for years. My Dad who passed away March 27, 2017 thought the world of Mr. Sosbee. He tried to check on him often when he found out he was having health problems. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Debbie Beard Wainwright

A Veteran

I didn't know MSG Sosbee, but I know with certainity the description of a true American hero and he surely fits those confines, as well as that of a Christian gentleman. May he rest in peace, with the gratitude of those who today enjoy the freedom for which he so bravely fought.
