COLUMBIA Gloria Carmen Fernandez De Velasco y Lopez Wise, 62, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Charleston on July 11, 2017, after a brave battle with cancer. A graduate of NYU, she was employed as a legal conflicts analyst with Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough Law Firm. She loved music, dancing and her dogs Fritzina, Pancho Bee and Jo-Jo.
Born in communist Cuba, Gloria moved from Havana to Miami with her family in 1960, where her father attended the University of Miami to re-establish his law degree as a U.S. citizen. The Fernandez family moved to New York City in 1963, where she later met her husband, Milton B. Wise, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Wise moved to South Carolina in 1992 to be close to his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Milton B. Wise (Elenita) of Seneca, S.C.
Gloria is predeceased by her parents, Joaquin & Carmen Fernandez, and her uncle Oscar Padro of NYC. She is survived by her brother, Jack Fernandez, his wife, Victoria and nephews Alex and Dylan of Ocean Ridge, FL; uncle, Orlando Padro and cousins, Barbara and Stanley of Coral Cables, FL; brother-in-law, Tim Wise, his wife Carrie, nephew, Josh and niece, Allie of Niwot, CO; and sister-in-law, Becky Potter, her husband, Billy and nephew, Nick of Richmond, VA.
As a dedicated employee of more than 20 years, Gloria was extraordinarily proud of her job and her colleagues at Nelson Mullins. She never knew a stranger, and will be lovingly remembered for her kind heart and her ability to make a friend wherever she went.
Visitation will be at 12 noon on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, with memorial service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine St., Columbia, SC. A family service and burial will be held at a later date in Newland, N.C.

A lovely person who I had the honor of knowing very well growing up in Woodside in the late 60's. A great smile, warm heart, graceful and oh, so beautiful. You influenced my life in so many wonderful ways and I became a much better person because of you. What a loss. Thanks for the memories Gloria!

Gloria was a wonderful woman and she will be missed very much. I had quite frequent interactions with her just a few years ago and always appreciated her vigilance and accuracy. Gloria was always so full of life and outgoing. She had a great sense of style and was an overall beautiful woman! Her departure deeply saddens me but I am also happy for her because I know she is in a beautiful place where we are all going to be one day. I miss you Gloria!
