Henry Lineberger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 12, 2017.

Henry O. Lineberger, Jr., was born on January 5, 1927, and died peacefully on July 11, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. His parents were the late Anne Simpson Lineberger and Henry O. Lineberger, Sr. of Raleigh. He attended Myrtle Underwood and Broughton High School, graduating in 1944 as president of the Senior Class. Upon graduation from Broughton, he was honored to serve in the Navy as part of the Medical Corps of the U.S. Naval Academy during World War II. At the end of the war he enrolled in Duke University, where he met the love of his life, Betty Rushing. They were married August 26, 1950, and made their first home together in Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the inaugural class of the UNC School of Dentistry. In 1954, as a new dental school graduate, he and Betty moved to Raleigh, where he set up his first dental practice in the office which had previously been his father's dental office. During his career, he served on many dental boards including the North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners. Henry continued to practice dentistry for over 50 years, and was devoted to his patients---always willing to meet them at the office any time, day or night. He was also a dedicated public servant, serving on numerous boards like the Raleigh Rescue Mission and the Duke Marine Lab.

Henry was a lifelong member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday School in the Hugh Isley Class, a special place of fellowship for Henry and Betty for many years. Being an active member of Edenton Street brought him immense joy, and all who knew him knew his Christian faith was the foundation of his life. As an adult, he spent many years immersed in numerous bible studies. He and Betty shared their love of Christ with others, especially their family.

A devoted family man, Henry will be remembered as a caring husband, father and grandfather who always had time for everyone. He shared his passion for Duke football and basketball, fishing, and golf with his children and grandchildren. Adoringly called Pinky by his grandchildren, Henry took his family to Duke basketball games hoping to inspire them to become Duke fans. As it turned out, they all attended UNC and became Tarheel fans. Annual beach vacations at Tybee Island, GA and Atlantic Beach, NC were special gathering times for the whole family. Beach activities were all led by Pinky with boundless energy, enthusiasm and patience.

Henry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Rushing. Also surviving are daughters Leigh Lineberger Smith (Montie), Anne Lineberger Williams (Cross), and grandchildren Rush, Caroline and Elizabeth Williams, and Will and Elizabeth Smith. Henry was predeceased by a brother James Lineberger of California and a sister Anne Hays of Texas.

The family would like to thank Henry's special caregivers Carolyn Weeks, Valerie Tisdale, and Paulette Fenton for their kind and loving care. Duke Raleigh Hospital and Transitions LifeCare also provided skilled and compassionate assistance during Henry's last days.

A memorial service will be held at Edenton Street United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 14th. A reception will follow in the Garden Gallery at Edenton Street United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Edenton Street United Methodist Church or Transitions LifeCare.

When I was 10, we moved to Raleigh and Dr. Lineberger became our family dentist. My family moved, but I stayed in Raleigh and with Dr. Lineberger until he retired. My children grew up going to him. I never said we're going to the dentist; it was always we're going to visit Dr. Lineberger. He was a wonderful man and he will be missed. My condolences to his family.

Dr. Lineberger has been our Dentist since 1966 on Wade Ave. He was such a soft spoken, smiling, caring and compassionate person. It was exciting to see him as we rode our bikes past his place at the beach. He was always asking about the kids even after they were grown and away from home. I missed him after he retired but excited when he'd drop by the office when I had my regular appointment. Such a sweet Dentist and man. God has gained an angel!

I would like to offer my condolences to the Lineberger family. Dr. Lineberger is the reason I became a dentist. He never hurt me as a child and when he fixed my front tooth I was fascinated at what he could do. Afterwards I changed my mind about being an MD to a dentist. God Bless you Dr. Lineberger for inspiring me to do
the job I love. Praying for you all.

Dr. Lineberger was our family dentist when we grew up in Smithfield and US 70 was a 2-lane road. He practiced with Danny Lotz on Wade Avenue. I remember reading Boys Life magazines in the reception area and raiding the treasure chest at check out Never knew he was a Dookie. What a great guy! He will be missed.

Sympathy and condolences to the Lineberger family. I'll miss seeing Henry at the Duke games, especially in Cameron Indoor Stadium where I had a good view of his seats and knew when he was in attendance. Another member of the Greatest Generation gone...sad. Remember all the good times!
