Felice Gallup Atencio, a long time resident of Burbank, CA, has died just short of her 104th birthday.
Felice Atencio was born July 28, 1913 in Velarde, New Mexico, the first child of Frank Gallup a geologist from Cleveland, Ohio and Simona Ortega Gallup of Dixon, New Mexico. When Felice was a young girl her father helped develop the mines just east of Dixon which had a number of precious metals used in making ceramics and optical lens used in the Mt. Palomar telescope. The mine became famous and the name was changed from the Dixon mines to the Harding Mine after President Harding.
At 25 Felice married Abiquiu School Principal Alfonso "Al" Atencio of Dixon. As WWII was heating up Al took a chance and moved his wife and young son David to Los Angeles, where he got a job at Lockheed Aircraft Co as a chemist. Felice was a stay at home economist and raised their three sons in their Burbank home.
Felice and her husband liked to travel throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. They also went to England, Europe, the Middle East, Egypt, South America, China and Japan.
Felice died July 11, 2017, just short of her 104th birthday. Her death was preceded by the passing of her husband Al and her eldest son David. She is survived by two sons, Frank and Thomas, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Debbie, thank you so much for posting. In the past couple of years before mom passed away Tom and I tried to get mom to write about growing up in New Mexico, moving to California, living during the war years and family history about the Harding Mines. It was difficult for her to speak and it became very difficult for her to write. I copied photos from an album and began showing them to her and she would always name the person in the photo and laugh if it was a funny photo. I have a few photos of your dad in uniform and uncle Art in uniform and Uncle Steve who was in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was bombed. I have 2 photos of grandma Onofre and grandpa Eleazar ( with a great bushy mustache) and grandpa Frank Gallup with a bushy mustache. Lots of fun photos. Please email me so we can share some memories and photos. Best wishes. Frank

I just saw that Aunt Felice passed away this past July, and I would like to send my condolences to Frank, Tommy and the rest of the family. I am Ernest and Lita Vigil's daughter from Santa Fe, NM. Unfortunately dad passed away in June, 2013, mom passed in July 2014, and my brother, Gary, passed in March 2015. The last time I visited with you all was in 1989 at your parents ' house as I had been hired by US AIR and was headed to work at LAX. If any of you should read this, I would love to talk to you. My email is [email protected]. Sending you all much love and prayers. Take comfort that Aunt Felice has been reunited with her beloved husband and son. Debbie B.
