Mustafa Onat Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 13, 2017.

Dr. Mustafa Onat graduated from Istanbul Medical School in 1949 after completing a rotating internship. He then served one year in the Turkish Army Medical Corp during 1949-1950.

Next, Dr. Onat served one year in OB/GYN at the University of Paris. While there, he also did research on the RH Factor and published an article in a French journal.

Desiring to learn English, he then came to the USA to serve a second year of rotating internship at Saint Thomas Hospital at Akron, Ohio during 1952-1953. From there, Dr. Onat moved to the Cleveland Clinic Hospital to carry out a two-year residency in Anesthesiology (1953-1955).
As soon as he became licensed to practice in Maine, Dr. Onat became a practicing Anesthesiologist and Internist at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, Maine where he served from 1956 through 1986.

Throughout his early years as a practicing Anesthesiologist, Dr. Onat studied and followed every advance made to reduce the incidence of pulmonary aspiration. Some improvements were made, but the problem was not solved. Thus motivated, Dr. Onat conceived, patented and for a time produced the ONAT Ballooned Nasogastric Tube.

Dr. Onat is dedicated to seeing that his device becomes the accepted norm for controlling Regurgitation and Aspiration and thus becomes his lasting contribution to medical science.

Dr. Onat is certified by the American College of Anesthesiologists.

He retired in 1986 and moved to Spring Hills, Florida, and later to his present home at Friendship Village in Chesterfield Missouri.

What a kind and gentle man he was. Always so peaceful and he had a great sense of humor. I will miss him. I regret not seeing more of him in recent years.

Thank you for being there for my grandpa Gilberta. He is the best example of a good man. I will miss him forever and I hope where is he knows it.

Dr Onat was a kind, congenial man with obvious gifts of intelligence and character, and a wonderfully dry sense of humor. When asked, he could always be counted on to provide not only sensible and helpful advice but concrete recommendations as well. Looking back I'm recalling conversations we had which involved automobiles, employment opportunities, financial matters, politics of the workplace, ethics, health of course, and many others. I am realizing how fortunate I was to have had him as a father-in-law. Gilberta, I am appreciative of all the love and support you have given him through the years and especially through this final period of his life. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.

Gilberta

Daddy was a good and kind man who knew how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. He taught me some of the most important things about being a decent person, a committed citizen, and happy in life. I will always be grateful for the security he provided us and the richness that he added to our lives.

I am grateful, too, that you shared such a good life together and hope that your memories and the love of friends and family will ease your sorrow.

So sad to hear the news. Grampa Onat was a kind and loving man who always made me feel comfortable in his presence when I was a child. I loved his accent and his dignified manner. I will always remember the fun days as a child when we stayed at the Hilton & went to Sweeties with Grampa and Nana buying me way too much candy, and spoiling me. I wish I could have spent more time with him as an adult.
