Dear Carter family - Likely none of you know me, but I wanted you to know that I feel as if a light has gone out in my world hearing of Warrick's passing. He and I, and Dan Youngdahl and Richard McCreary, all became friends as early faculty hires at Governors State in 1972. We were all so young and thinking we could make the changes that were in the air. For all of us, Warrick was something of a miracle--creating a phenomenal jazz band of "transfer students" from south Chicago whose playing was beyond belief. He even brought Wynton Marsalis to campus! Occasionally I played with the band when he needed a violinist--and I especially remember the beautiful piece for Keisha Z. He was such a kind and generous man. Inevitably we lost touch, and I am just so very sad that he has passed. Sending love to all of you.

To the Carter family,
I was very sad to hear of Warrick's passing, as I was hoping I would get to see him again someday. He made a giant impact on my life and the lives of many at Berklee College of Music. He was a great leader and a man with integrity and dedication to his work. He understood what it meant to be a musician and had a deep respect for the faculty and chairs here at the school. His life was a life well-lived and I will always feel grateful for the support he gave me as a chair in the piano department and I loved him for it! I am sorry for your loss but happy that he was in my life!

To the Carter family,
After learning about the passing of Dr. Warwick Carter, it was very sad and utterly shocking. I was glad to have known him from a student to an alumna. The work he has done for Columbia College Chicago was inspiring and admirable. And I was gracious enough have known him, as a talented drummer. I found that out during the 10th mark of his anniversary; as the president of the School and had the pleasure of sharing the stage with him as a student. His legacy will live on through the entire Columbia College Community, who had the pleasure of working with him under his leadership. I will keep the entire family in prayer and thank you for sharing him with us. He will be greatly missed! Rest in Power Dr. Carter!

A moment that would eventually change the view
Of a school marked by some
As a second, third, or fourth choice
Became a coveted first choice by many.

Of "one" moments
A brave man,

A learned man, musician . . .

Dear Laurel,
I am shocked and saddened to hear the news Warrick's passing. I've had a photo of us together hanging on my wall at school for over 20 years now. As you may recall, Warrick hired me at Berklee and supported my conversion to full-time. He was the warmest and gentlest soul, who cared deeply for others. I am forever in his debt. He encouraged my attendance and funded my travel to the Foundation for Human Potential symposia in Chicago. The relationships developed there changed my teaching career profoundly. The interdisciplinary dialogue at FHP served as the impetus for the Committee for Music Perception and Cognition Studies at Berklee, which in turn laid the groundwork for the direction of our Berklee Teachers on Teaching annual gathering.
Warrick and I also stayed in touch when he was appointed as President of Columbia in my hometown of Chicago. The last time we spoke, he was advising my nieces and nephews in support of their application to Columbia as students. He was forever supportive and remains as a most influential guide in my music education career. There are myriad reasons he is a part of The HistoryMakers...imagine all the personal stories like mine that show his generosity, vision and love added to the ones published there. His contribution to Music Education was vast and remarkable, thus his influence will be felt for generations to come. Please accept my deepest condolences to you and your extended family.
Sending much love,
Mitch Haupers

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Carter and to Dr. Warrick L. Carter's family and friends. I knew both of you at Columbia College Chicago and it was a pleasure. I remember several conversations but my favorite was when I got employment with Jazz Legend Ramsey E. Lewis, Pianist/Composer and our long conversations about his bold and beautiful neckties, bowties and pocket squares. Remember, Mrs. Carter' remember all of the good times and we know that he is "absent from the body but he is present with the Lord, 2 Corinthians 5:8." Rest in the arms of Jesus, Dr. Carter and we will see each other on the other side.
Love you,

Dear Laurel and family,
I share in your loss of dear Warrick who I always referred to as the "gentle giant". My fondest memories of his gentle and caring ways was when he made two different arrangements for my dear grandchildren to have a day at Disney when they were young. Serving as a former president of NASPAAM and now current secretary, he always made himself available to us, sometimes at moment's notice. Know that we in NASPAAM mourn his passing, too, and will always hold your family in our prayers.

My deepest condolences to Laurel and all of Dr. Carter's family. It was Warrick who by what he said in one quiet, personal conversation convinced me to come all the way to Chicago from New Zealand in 2001. Warrick understood and respected the importance of family, and was always gracious and generous to Toni, Arlo, and Leroy. The last time I saw him was in Fall 2016, and it was a relief to have a genuine conversation about young people's dreams.

Warrick and I go back to the early seventies when he was on the faculty at the brand-new Governors State University and I was completing my bachelor's degree there. We both were selected to be a part of a GSU-sponsored USO tour of the Far East and spent one summer entertaining the troops in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Phillipines. Just before he retired, we had lunch and caught up. He spoke lovingly of his twin grandchildren - still the kind man I'd known so many years before. May he rest in peace.

Dear Laurel ,
I am not sure you remember me but I do remember meeting you at the Bay Tower Club in Boston. I was singing there that evening. I was a voice faculty member at Berklee , Warrick Carter was the Dean of Faculty.
I just retired this May from Berklee, moving back to my hometown of St. Louis..
I recall so many wonderful conversations with Dr.Carter.
He was responsible for me coming to Berklee College and latter he apponted me Chair of the Voice Department. I recently saw Warrick at the Jazz Conference in New Orleans.
We talked about many things including being retired!
What a wonderful musician, role model , educator and man.
I have the utmost respect for Warrick Carter.
I am so saddened by his passing as I know you must be. Please accept my sympathy . I also send my condolences to his daughter as well. Jan Shapiro
