Joe Varsalona Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 20, 2017.

Varsalona, Joe 94, left this world on July 19, 2017. Our much-loved husband, Daddy and Nano was born on October 6, 1922, in Ybor City to Sicilian immigrants, Calogero and Ignazia (Maniscalco) Varsalona, who predeceased him. Joe was also predeceased by his brother Peter and other loved ones of both older and younger generations. Cherishing many memories of the one-of-a-kind person he was are his loving wife, Helen (nee Caldwell); daughters JoEllen (Jim) Carlson and Bekki (D. Tom) Colestock; grandchildren Gina (Chris) Miles, Joel Perez, D. J. (Bridget) Colestock; great-grandchildren Jordan, Jonathan, Jason Miles, Josie Perez, Kylee Colestock, and Wyatt Colestock. Joe also leaves his niece Sandra (Michael) Scaglione, cousin Rosemary Hodge, his next-generation Salemi cousins, and special nieces and nephews to remember what a fun character he was. Pancho, his best little fur buddy, is sad. Joe served proudly in the Army Air Corps in World War II, flying 50 missions as a bombardier over Europe. From the age of 14, he worked at Walk Over Bootery in downtown Tampa and later became one of the nation’s first certified pedorthists and bought the store. He loved to play golf, fish, smoke a fine cigar, and deliver meals on wheels – all of which he did until he was 93. His greatest joy was making people laugh, smile, and be comfortable. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at the Garden of Memories, 4207 E Lake Ave, Tampa, with services following. In lieu of flowers, Joe would have appreciated donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Tampa, 12502 USF Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612-9411 or Sun City Center Hospice House, 3725 Upper Creek Dr, Ruskin, FL 33573.

It is sad, in a way, as Life goes on and we go our separate ways. Certain people make an impact or impression on us throughout our lives. Joe was that kind of person!
I remember starting as a preteen and later on getting shoes from Joe at Walkover. He and my Family were close as were the Solomons.
Our Prayers to the Family! A Great Man & Wonderful Person!
