Johnsie, I am so sorry for your loss. I met you once and enjoyed your singing at my parents home. I am the daugther of Eddie and Marilyn Plemmons. I just learned of your father's death, today, 7/27. I wished I had know of the service as I was in Greensboro at that time. I enjoyed the warmth and the humor of your father. Your folks were good friends of my parents. Daddy thought the world of your father. John was so very talented! I am not sure if you heard that my mother, Marilyn, passed away 7/4/16. I am thinking of you.Yvonne Plemmons

Johnsie what can we say about such an extraordinary gentleman as your dad. Everyone could relate to John. He never met a stranger. He was so kind hearted. He loved God, music, softball and loved laughter. He showed us a great example of marriage through sickness and in health, he loved your mother(Kathy). They were great together. I can almost hear their laughter as I recall so many fond memories. All of us were envious when he wrote your mom a love letter and made it into a song. "Tiny Hands" we were blessed to be at the first debut. You were truly blessed to have such godly parents. You may not have always agreed with them but they loved their daughter. Never missing a chance to share how proud they were of you. May God comfort you during this time. Remember the words of wisdom they gave and the many prayers. You have a great godly heritage. You, me, all of us will be able to see them again. John 3:16

Dear Johnsie, I have fond memories of John and Cathy and you when you all would visit my mother Jenevia Hutchins Hale (John's cousin) and my father Charlie Hale in Galax. In more recent years, I appreciated the emails he would send me from time to time and enjoyed seeing him at music events when he would be in Virginia. John was a lovely, caring and talented man. I'm glad he was able to be with you for many happy years in Hawaii. Love, Pam Hale

Johnsie, We are so sorry to hear of John's passing. He was an inspiration to us kids at church as we were growing up in Fries, Va. He would play guitar while my sister Gail and I sang. He was a good musician and singer and enjoyed listening to him. He will sadly be missed. He was with me when my dad died and that meant a lot to me. Great man. RIP, Randy and Roxanne Hall

Johnsie, we are so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. As you know your Daddy and Mother were dear friends of ours. Fairel helped your Dad move here from Freeze, VA. We had so much fun during that time. I stayed with your Mother. Later you came along which was a joy to all of us. They were so proud of you and of course we were also! John helped us with several home improvements which we appreciated so much. He had a great outlook on life. Loved the Lord and loved to sing and play his guitar which he did very well. We had many happy times in their home which we will always remember. God bless you and if we can be of any help please let us know.

As a neighborhood boy, I used to visit Mr. Sumner's shop behind his house. He was always working on some sort of project. One of those projects was a motorized bike he made. He sold it to me and I rode it for countless hours.
He taught me several things as he worked on things in and about his shop.
Thanks for everything Mr. Sumner.
