My uncle Ken was a great man. I always had deep respect for him and valued his insight. I wish that I had known him better, but have always cherished the few times that I spent around him. Once, as a boy, he dropped me off at a pond on the flats of Texas while he and my father (Dan) went duck hunting elsewhere. I tried loading the shotgun he left me with but could only get three shells into it. I found a short dowel rod 'stuck' in the magazine that prevented loading anymore than three. Well, I pulled that rod out of there and pitched it far away. Then I was able to really load up that shotgun. Boy could I blast away then!
When they picked me up later, I told Uncle Ken how I had fixed his shotgun so it would work better. He started laughing so hard while my dad was shaking his head in disappointment. I was confused so I asked what was so funny. Uncle Ken told me that if the Game Warden had caught me with that shotgun "illegally loaded' like that, we would all probably be in jail and his truck and guns confiscated. Later, when prairie dog hunting, I got to shoot Jim Brim's "Nitro-Pellet" gun. Uncle Ken told me I was a good shot with that inaccurate gun. I am not sure which I liked most, his praise or that really cool yellow-explosive pellet rifle.
Well, I have fond memories of him and Aunt Bev and loved spending time with my cousins (their children): Kimmy, Ken Jr, and Randy. Summer came along well after that time. I do miss those days but I know that when Jesus comes to call the saved from the grave, we can all meet again with new bodies. Until then, I keep the commandments and try to stay true to the Lord, just like Uncle Ken told me we all should. I miss you Uncle Ken but look forward to seeing you at the regeneration.
