Harper and my father Andy were close friends at Charlestown for more than 10 years. Among the many things they held in common were their Scottish ancestry and status as World War II veterans. My father's last years were made all the more enjoyable and meaningful thanks to Harper, and I will always treasure him for that. Over the course of my visits back to Maryland from the west coast, I had the good fortune to get to know Harper myself and to appreciate firsthand the fine person he was--a gentle, kind, and intelligent man with a deep connection to the natural world. I will always be grateful to have known Harper. In fact, I believe that many lives have been touched by him in profound ways. He will be missed.

Harper was a true hero in more ways than one. He was a WWII hero and a hero to all the trees he so lovingly took care of all his long years as a trained arborist.
But he was also a special hero to the son and daughter-in-law of a fellow resident at Charlestown, one Elsie Joan Urbas or EJ as she is affectionately known.
He was always a comfort to my wife and I as we went through the challenges of my mother (who was also one of Harper's sweethearts) while we dealt with her early stages of dimentia. His kind advice and encouragement was always a welcome relief to us both. We came to love him as much as did my mother. So now that he is in God's hands we say, "rest in peace old dear friend."

When Harper and Kathryn moved to Charlestown, we bought their house and property in Randallstown. Harper returned often and taught us how to care for the orchard, asparagus bed, and blackberries. He became like a father to us and we grew to love him.
We named the property "Harper Hill" and that name eventually became our homemade wine label, too.
After 22 years when we decided it was time for us to also move to a senior retirement community, we followed Harper to Charlestown. He was a great guy and always fun to be around. He will be sorely missed.

I knew Harper for only the last two years at Charlestown. He is a true American hero and he will be remembered with warmth by all who knew him. I am a better person for having known him. May God bless Harper and all of his friends and family.
