John Dodson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 28, 2017.

John Willis Dodson, 86 of Madison, Virginia passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on Friday, July 28, 2017. He was born in Culpeper on May 15, 1931 to Richard Hezekiah and Rhoda Frances Jenkins Dodson; served his country for a decade in the U.S. Air Force; was a civil servant for the federal government; and owned and operated both Little John's Market and the A-1 Country Store. He also volunteered his time selflessly as a Hunter Education Instructor for 28 years, often with his loving wife by his side. He received many awards including the Morgan Award for Hunter Education, the International Hunter Education Hall of Fame Award and the Virginia Hunter Education Lifetime Achievement Award. John was the founder of Cedar Mountain Youths with a mission of teaching young people firearm safety and responsibility. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and mentoring others. John believed that our first loyalty was to God, then to his country, then to his family, and only then to himself.
Mr. Dodson was beloved as a husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lucy Ruth Woods Dodson of Madison; his children, David L. Dodson and wife Laurie of Rhoadesville, Cheryl D. Goldsborough and husband Lee of Brightwood; his grandchildren, Rebecca Dodson, Rachel Dodson and husband Eddie Norlander, Renae Helwig and husband Aaron, Evan Goldsborough and fiancé Jacqueline Allen, Amelia Goldsborough; and his siblings Mary Huntt, Alice Reed and husband Ben, Gertrude Fant, and James Dodson. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Elizabeth Marshall, his brother Richard Lewis Dodson and an infant son, Richard David Dodson.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Clore-English Funeral Home, Friday August 4, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with internment in Culpeper National Cemetery, Chandler Street, Culpeper, VA with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 2524 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Clore-English Funeral Home, 11190 James Monroe Highway, Culpeper, VA.

It is difficult to come up with words to say goodbye to a loved one or comfort those left behind after his passing. But it is a small comfort knowing that the sorrow we feel is but a measurement of the love we felt for him.
Our deepest sympathy and heart felt sorrow to the family and friends who mourn Mr. Dodson.

I thank my Uncle John for so many things. Teaching me to hunt and fish. Being there when I got my first buck. The countless times we went hunting, fishing, and camping. Taking the trip to Montana to the Rocky Mountains trout fishing and across the country. Uncle John taught me many lessons in life over my years growing up. One of the most important is to truly love the outdoors, which I always have. Uncle John was my mentor growing up. I will miss my Uncle John he was my friend. Aunt Ruth, David and Cheryl know that we will keep you in our prayers.

With great memories of beagles, bears, mountain lions, fishing trips, and frog giging in California. Still reflect on quiet admonition from John not to play with his Bowie knife and his simple statement " I told you it was sharp" as he and my dad competently sewed up thumb with vet thread and needle. Lesson learned. Thanks Johnny. Love to family

Though I have been part of the family for but 5 years, I loved Grandad. My only regret is not being able bodied to spend time with him doing what he loved most, being in the outdoors. I love you Grandad and already miss you dearly. Give my brother Christopher a hug for me!

Unlike many others I haven't known John as long as they. Through my association with the CMYI organization I have gotten to know him personally and a more dedicated and friendly person doesn't exist. John has been one of the main driving forces behind this civic -minded group and he will be sorely missed. My condolences go out to his family.

Loving prayers for John's family as they learn to live without him. He will never be forgotten and will live on forever in our memories. Our communities are so much better because of him due to his love and teachings of the outdoors through VA Hunter Education and Cedar Mt Shooting Sports & Youth Club. Very much known for his love and devotion to his family, dedication, drive and fundraising abilities for his clubs, leadership, wit and charm. He was definitely one of a kind. He will be sorely missed.

May God bless and be with the family as you grieve the loss of John. He was such a wonderful person and friend. Our community is so much better because of him, for all the youth and adults he taught in hunters education and shooting sports, his drive for fundraising, his love of hunting and fishing and the training classes he led so others could learn the love of the outdoors. We will miss and always remember his spirit, humor, honesty, hard work, dedication and love for his family, life, outdoor sports, Virginia Hunter Education, Cedar Mountain Shooting Sports and Youth. It's hard to describe John with words. He was definitely one of a kind. When God made him, he broke the mold. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to have known him and his family and will always remember what a special friend he was to me and all the trips to the Skyline Drive bear hunting.
