Miller Jr. Additionally, four nieces, Marylene, Gladys, June and Maxine; three nephews, Frank James, Toney and Danny, several grandnephews, and several grandnieces.
Survivors include her daughter, Barnette Miller Moore (John W.), daughter in law, Heidemarie Murray Miller (Gilbert, Jr. dec.); her grandsons and their families, Rodney Moore (Victoria) and children, Isaac, Isaiah, and Luna; Ahli Moore (Angie) and their children, Ari, Alisia, and Kellen; Dr. Joshua Moore (Carlisha) and their children, Jeancarlo and Jolie; nieces, Barbara, Madelyn, and Linda; nephews, Robert Jr., William and Stanley; grandnieces, Adrianne, Blanche, Briontia, Camila, Carla, Debbie, Dollie, Donna, Gerrine, Jackie, Marie, Maryanne, Piper, and Terry; grandnephews, Ala, Ali, Andre, Aurin, Bill, Bruce, Michael, and Patrick; Godson, Charles (Zenobia) Anderson and foster daughter, Deloris (Bobby) Garnett.
Loving her always are all of her cousins, and a host of loving relatives from Gilbert’s side of the family. Lifelong friends and colleagues in Martin, Polk, and Dade counties and acquaintances she was fortunate to meet as she and Gilbert travelled the world.
Dollie was educated in Polk County, and in 1945, graduated from Jewett High School. Upon completion of high school, Dollie entered Bethune-Cookman College (University) where she met and married Gilbert Miller ( a love affair that lasted for 62 years). Their union produced two children, Barnette (aka Barney) and Gilbert Jr. (aka Peter).
She completed her undergraduate studies with a BA degree in Elementary Education and Home Economics. Her first teaching assignment was as an intern Stuart Training School (Spectrum). She was later awarded a permanent assignment as a fifth grade teacher at that same school. Both she and Gilbert sought to further their professional studies, first at FAME, then later at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana where they both earned their Master’s degrees.
Impressed with her abilities (and degrees), the Martin County School Board offered her the position of Elementary school guidance counselor at Jensen Beach Elementary which she accepted. Although she constantly sough to attain personal/professional goals, she never forget her duty to the community and the people she had come to know and respect. For that reason for many years, she taught adult education, tutored, participated in unsponsored field trips for neighborhood youth using on her personal resources. She constantly sought to bring advantages to her local community, like the Boys and Girls Club, Planned Parenthood, and the free lunch program. She was a member of many altruistic organizations, including ZETA and ADK Sororities, Les Amies Social org., Martin County Teacher’s Union, Retired Teachers Union, and Daughters of the King Church.
Although her earliest religious teachers began in the Methodist Church, Dollie has an inquisitive mind which drive her to enjoy services in the Baptist thought, doctrines in the Church of God, and finally to Episcopalian ideology where she settled. First at St. Monica, then permanently to St. Luke’s. At this church home, Dollie served as a Lay minister, youth religious teacher, thrift store worker, and Daughter of the King member.
After more than 35 years in public education, Dollie retired. She chose however to volunteer rather than sit at home, and made the decision to return to teaching as a substitute at Murray Middle School and South Fork High School. In 2002, breaking both legs in a fall, her very active lifestyle ended. Later losing her ablility to walk, she would remain wheelchair bound for the next 15 years.
