Iris D'Alvia Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2017.

Iris (nee Graves) Stevens D'Alvia, died at home, in Croton on Hudson, New York on the evening of August 5th, 2017 at the age of 77, in the arms of her daughters, surrounded by her pets. The cause of death was COPD.
Iris was born on May 2, 1940, in Raleigh, North Carolina. At the age of 2, her family moved to Philadelphia, PA, where she later was a concert pianist with the Philadelphia Junior Philharmonic and an accomplished violist and painter. A graduate of Syracuse University in 1962, she moved to New York City where she began a career as an educator and publishing associate. In 1971, she returned home to Upper Westchester for good from one long year in the Los Angeles sunshine, and became an avid environmentalist and conservationist during the early fight to close the Indian Point power plant. After the birth of her youngest child in 1980, Iris began a three-decade association with Croton Schools as the founder and director of the After-School and Continuing Education Programs for the district. Both programs thrived under her direction and she loved the generations of children and adults in the community for whom those programs served.
In the mid 1990s, Iris began a second career as a public servant for Westchester County Economic Development, and spent the last 10 years of her tenure there as the Director of the Film Office, which gave her great joy. She retired from the County at age 70, and continued her work for Croton Schools until 2016.
Iris was passionate about animals and in her retirement she maintained a part time job at her beloved veterinarian's office in Croton-on-Hudson. Iris relished natural beauty and nurtured this love of life through gardening, amateur bird-watching, and in the simple pleasure of conversation with close friends.
Iris is survived her children, David, Rachel, and Lauren, grandchildren Griffin, Rebecca, Leah, Elena and her beloved pets, Gilly and Gert.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 5-8PM at Edward F. Carter Funeral Home, 41 Grand St, Croton on Hudson, NY. Funeral service will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 9th at 11AM, St. Augustine Episcopal Church, also in Croton.

So sad to hear of Iris's passing. What a remarkable life. She was wonderfully, extraordinarily supportive and caring to me both personally and as my boss in the after school program. I will remember her always.

Iris got me involved in local politics in the best way possible. I didn't think it was possible to speak to elected officials in that way! Her positive energy extended to the tremendous after school programs she ran and my daughters benefited from. I am left with the happy memory of her working with her beloved animals in her later days.

My condolences to Lauren and all of Iris's family. Iris and I got to know each through the Croton Free Library, and I always admired her for her energy and for her many passions and pursuits. Rest In Peace, Iris.

I had the pleasure of serving as Chairman of the Peekskill Democratic City Committee while Iris was the Chairwoman of the Cortlandt Town Democratic Committee. She was tough as nails. She wasn't ever afraid to ruffle feathers to get things done. She was tenacious, aggressive, and never one to bite her tongue. She helped lead the Northern Westchester Democratic Committees into a more powerful block to compete with the individual voting power the larger City Committees south of 287 were able to wield at county conventions. She also turned Westchester into a film mecca while running the county film office and recruiting production companies to film here, while serving under the leadership of County Executive Andy Spano. She was an ally the Peekskill Democratic City Committee could always count on and someone that I personally learned a great deal from. I'm sad to hear of her passing but grateful for the legacy she left to the county and to Democratic politics in Westchester. Rest In Peace, Iris.

Iris was a wonderful strong woman, and I am so glad to have gotten to see her in action as we worked together on the Northern Westchester Coalition. She taught me so much about being a Chair, and her passion for doing the right thing will always stay with me.

Like the cats Iris loved, Iris lived 9 lives as a loving Mom, civic leader, educator, civil servant, election and party leader, environmental advocate and more. We will miss her civic and humane world views and wisdom very much.

Iris lived a life full of so many chapters. Not only a deep love for her family and children but she also carried a strong civic commitment to important environmental causes, local issues and recruiting and supporting good decent people for elective office. Iris's life long work in education was so impressive and it was just a parallel to her other pursuits such as her growing the Westchester County Film Office from nothing to a reputable, robust booking engine for films and commercials. One could go on and on citing Iris's impressive life. I was lucky to know Iris and benefit from her deep knowledge of Westchester but all of that was deeply rooted in a desire to do the right thing for people, students, citizens, neighbors, animals and her family who she spoke of often and with love and pride.

Iris hired me for the CET after-school program, after a fun phone call about the class I wanted to teach. Her faith that the class would be a good one for the kids gave me confidence, and that was much appreciated. I will miss her deadpan style and real interest in the world around us. Thank you, Iris.

Iris was an passionate, intelligent, beautiful woman who knew the important things in life were family, friends and pets. Iris was a great conversationalist who knew both how to share a good story and listen intently to the stories of others. I am honored that she counted me as her friend. I will miss her more than words can express. All my love to her family.
