Donna Lakins passed away suddenly in her home on June 21, 2017. She is survived by her daughter Reagan and her brother Richard Stookey.
Donna was born in Denver, Colorado on June 24, 1940, joining her brother Richard in Dale and Dorotha Stookey's young family. In 1943, following Dale's work on electric motors for submarines, they moved to the San Francisco Area, living in San Mateo, San Francisco and Daly City. When Donna was in 10th Grade the family moved to Pacific Grove where she completed High School. She was an avid horseback rider among other hobbies she enjoyed. During her time as a professional dancer in Monterey, Donna met her husband, Fred Lakins, and they formed a lasting friendship before finally deciding to get married several years later and spending some time in Newport Beach. Shortly after this move, their daughter Reagan was born, and Donna and Fred decided to relocate back to Pacific Grove to be closer to family. It was then that Donna discovered her passion for cleaning homes, and started her own housecleaning business. She would build this business into a thriving one that lasted over 20 years until her decision to retire due to health concerns. After retiring, Donna discovered a new passion in collectibles, as well as in knitting. She created many quilts and donated them to non-profits. She loved sharing coffee, debates and laughter with friends at the local Denny's. She was also an avid animal rights supporter, and tithed regularly to several animal rights organizations.
Although a very private individual, Donna left a significant imprint in the lives and relationships she formed over the years. She will be deeply missed, both for her deep heart and fiery spirit. Any condolences or contributions can be sent to Monterey County SPCA in her honor.
