Nina Ruth (Steele) Elkins, 83, of Nitro, formerly Port Amherst, passed on peacefully surrounded by her children at Thomas Memorial Hospital on Sunday, August 6, 2017.
She was born April 11, 1934 on Godby Branch, Logan County, to the late Ewing H. and Maude (Godby) Steele.
She was retired from JC Penney where she worked as Telephone Receptionist (The voice of JC Penney) and had also worked at Purity Maid Bakery, Staats Hospital and Bert Wolfe Ford. Nina was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Nitro. She was a member of the Salina Chapter #81 O.E.S. where she served as Past Worthy Matron and Bible Bearer.
Nina is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, William “Bill” Elkins, seven brothers, Harl, Carl, Charles, Paul, Frank, Fred, and James “Bob” Steele, one sister, Doris Stollings and her best friend and road warrior, Helen Ollis.
Nina is survived by her sons David (Susie) of Belle, Jeff (Laurie) of Nitro, Gregg (Heather) of Dunbar, and daughter Beth (Dale) Drake of Chantilly, VA; her sister Lillian Chapman of Cookeville, TN, and brother David “Coots” (Barb) Steele of Chapmanville. She also leaves behind grandchildren Terra Elkins of Pinch, Natalie (Travis Kozen) Elkins of Belle, Caroline (Philip) Sword of Charleston, Christopher (Brittany Valentine) Elkins of Dunbar, Jacob (Amy) Elkins of Monroe, OH, Lena and Isaac Elkins of Nitro, Dakota Drake of Bush, LA., Hudson and Sophia Drake of Chantilly, VA, and 13 great-grandchildren, Taylor Kuhn, Lucas and Hunter Looney, Cora, Silas, and Kate Kozen, Vivian, Elias, and Lucille Sword, William and Tyler Elkins, and Aubrey and Allyson Elkins; also neighbors, Jeff and Sheri Rasberry of Nitro.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday August 10, 2017 at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden with Rev. Greg Markins officiating. The committal service will follow at 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Peck Mills.
A visitation with family and friends will be held on Wednesday August 9, 2017 from 6 to 8 PM with an Eastern Star Service beginning at 5:30 PM at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses at Thomas Memorial Hospital ICU, for all their love and care.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be sent to the Charleston Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center, 406 Capital St. Charleston, WV 25301 or the Eastern Star Salina Chapter #81, 204 West Main Street, Belle, WV 25015.

I just found out about Nina's passing. She was a true lady and a wonderful person. I learned a lot working with her those many years ago at JCPenney. I will always remember her voice, laughter and humor.

Sorry I could not be there, my prayers and thought are with the familly. As I viewed the video my first thought was that the world will miss her smile. I wonder if her last thoughts was, "come over and see me in my new home." May the God of comfort and peace be with you.
