To the Hughes family
From our very first meeting with Pat..... that southern Virginia accent, his "southern gentleman" politeness, the deep voice, his love for Stonewall Jackson, his pride for being a southerner, prompted me to give a Pat a nickname ......."THE GENERAL".
West Virginia was The General's second home. Oh how he loved it here.
My husband Jimmy and I met Pat in the early 90's. Pat was a super friend, he was family. He rented a house from us, worked for us, ate many dinners with us, we fished together, we drank beer together -
Early on in our friendship, The General told us how he would love to own property someday in West Virginia, especially in Glenwood Forest, the mountain sub-division were he was living. We helped him with his dream and sold him the rental house. How proud he was of his house, even displaying the "Southern Cross" out front. The General and his dog Jesse had the perfect paradise to call home.
Pat was always there to help us if we needed it. He took a special liking to my father and didn't hesitate to call my father Pop; always going out of his way to talk to my father or inquire about him.
So many memories....... lots of float trips down the Potomac River, Back Creek, and the Shenandoah River. A trip to Sarasota and Venice Florida with my husband Jimmy; camping at our river lot; fish cookouts; and hundreds of hours of good conversation.
The General will be missed, but not forgotten. We will celebrate his life by keeping the memories alive. As painful as it is now, talking about him is good.
The good Lord will give you the strength to get through this dark time. I believe he is now pain free, has a fishing pole in his hand, his dog Jesse by his side, and that incredible smile is on his face.
Believe. May the Good Lord bless you all.
