Amelia Rosales Aguirre, 82, of Abilene left her earthly home to join her Heavenly Father on Monday, August 7, 2017, in her home surrounded by family.
Amelia was born on December 19, 1934, in Coleman to Felipe and Manuela Diaz Rosales. She married Benjamin R. Aguirre in 1953, and they settled in Abilene. During her lifetime, she was active in the community, fought for equality in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and 1970s, was active in political-action groups, worked as a truant officer, was a senior citizen director, was area coordinator for Texas for the Educational Advancement of Mexican Americans (TEAM), and owned a beauty salon. Amelia spent many years as an active spiritual leader in her community. Amelia will be greatly missed by all those lives she touched.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin R. Aguirre; her children, Benjamin Leo Aguirre and his wife Nancy Ann of Abilene, Nelli Ann Aguirre, Susie Aguirre and her partner Jennifer LaGrange, Jonathan Ryan Aguirre all of Austin; her granddaughter who lived with her, Andrea Ann Esparza; her great-grandchildren who she helped raise, Katelyn Renee Nam and her husband Uteton, Christiana Nicole Whitley, Thalea Elisa Esparza, and Lillianna Noelle Esparza; three additional grandchildren; seven additional great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter; her siblings, Octaviano (Otto) Rosales, Robert Rosales, Nena Rosales, Lydia Sanchez all of Coleman, Eduardo Rosales, Jane Castañon, Ezekiel Rosales all of Abilene, and Salatiel Rosales and Anita Escobar of San Antonio.
Amelia is preceded in death by her parents; seven siblings; two children, Andres Aguirre and Cary Lynn Aguirre; and a granddaughter, Erica Lynn Aguirre Esparza Whitley.
The family would like to acknowledge Amelia's extended family, Angelica Rodriguez, Francisco Villarreal, and Norma Almaguer, for their love, devotion, and spiritual support.
Services will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017, at the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel, 5701 Highway 277 South, in Abilene. Visitation will be 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., a rosary will begin at 1 p.m. followed by funeral services at 1:30 p.m.

My sincerest sympathy to the family. And what a family! I served along side Sergeant Aguirre and taught Susie science. Mrs. Aguirre went above and beyond in service to the community. She was not here just to drink punch and eat the cookies. She stepped up, stepped in, and made a difference. One of God's loyal and faithful servants.
