Marie Harter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 8, 2017.

Marie Lupe Harter was born in San Jose on June 13, 1962 to Rachael Leon and Clarence Vermillion. She graduated from Davis High School in Modesto. For 18 years, Marie worked as an Administrative Secretary for the University of California Cooperative Extension in Stanislaus County. Marie loved to garden, crochet and cook for family and friends. She loved dancing, country music, camping, fishing, horseback riding, spending time outdoors, and her dog, Buddy. Marie's heart belonged to her three children, Joseph Zarate, Christina Oliver, and Vanessa Oliver, as well as her four grandchildren. She had an enormous heart, and treated everyone like family. Marie's generous spirit left a lasting impression, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Marie will be laid to rest on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson, California.

I met Marie in 8th grade at Roosevelt Junior Highschool after moving to Modesto from Columbia. We became fast friends and were best friend until the day she died. We moved away from each other several times, but always ended up back together. Marie was my labor coach when I had my oldest daughter. With a flair all her own, Marie ran in to help me with my delivery...in a big floral dress and high heels! I was at each of her children's births, birthdays, baptisms, graduations, and other family events. She was my other sister. Her mom was my other mom. I was the "white" member of her very large hispanic family. There was never a dull moment with Marie. Our floating trip on the river was fun and memorable. I have so many memories of my best friend. More than I could ever write down. I love you BFF. Nothing will ever change that.

I worked with Marie for several years and had the chance to really get to know her. She is one of the sweetest people I know. She always had a smile on her face and was ready for fun. One of my favorite memories of her is when someone brought in a bunch of peaches to the office. I said to her, "wow, look at all of them! They would make a great cobbler. But, I'm not sure what kind of crust is best, traditional or crumbly." She took the hint and brought in TWO amazingly delicious cobblers the next day. She always made such yummy desserts.

When Marie sold Princess House I purchased a few items like a tea set and a pretty pitcher, and now when I use them they remind me of her.

To her children: I am so sorry for your loss. She was a light and encouragement to all her knew her. I hope you can take comfort in that.

Unfortunately, I only got to meet Marie a couple months before she was taken from us. I don't normally perceive people's greatest qualities upon meeting them for the first time, and the first impression Marie had on me, actually shocked me. I could just feel her genuity, and it truly touched me to the point that I felt the need to tell people about this awesome woman I had just met. I got to see her a few times after that initial meeting, and I was glad to have been introduced to such a sweet person. I am so sorry for you all, I can't even imagine what you're feeling during this time. But...... look to the lord, and lean on those that are offering help. We're all here for you. Love every one of you.

My family has had the pleasure of getting to know Marie for a very short time, she was a wonderful next door neighbor to our father; she always had a smile for you and enjoyed the brief conversations across the back yard fence while she was working on her yard. We will deeply miss her; prayers to Marie's family.
