Joseph Gardiner Obituary

Joseph William Fawsitt Gardiner, March 8, 1920 - August 3, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Joe Gardiner on August 3, 2017 in Los Angeles. Beloved husband of Marianne Gardiner, who predeceased him in 1996; brother to Audrey Hailley Gardiner Telford and Rodney Sinnott Coltman, both deceased; loving uncle to Anthony, Nicola, Caroline, and Guy; dear great uncle to Linny, David, Annabel, Emma, Kiah, Phoebe, Henry, Peter and William; Joe filled the geographical distance between us with his love, guidance, and care. He was a great presence in our lives and we mourn him deeply.

Joe was born in England and attended Bradfield College and Cambridge University. He served in the Royal Navy, 1939-1945, on active service in the Atlantic, Arctic, Mediterranean, and with American forces at Utah beach on D-Day. He met Marianne in 1943 in New York City, and they married at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in 1945, prior to his shipping to the Pacific to prepare for the invasion of Japan. Joe spent most of his career working for Hilton in Chicago, New York, and finally, Los Angeles. He retired from the position of Senior Vice-President in 1986, in order to care for Marianne who was in ill health.

Joe leaves behind him many dear friends in the Hilton community and at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Beverly Hills, particularly Chris and Debbie Winchell, who have shown great love and care for him over many years.

Joe’s family would like to recognize the outstanding dedication and love shown to him by Isabel Lopez and Thelma Sanchez and their families. Their relationship to Marianne and Joe spans decades, and Joe’s family is most grateful for their devotion to him, particularly in his final days. The family would also like to recognize the staff of St. John of God Retirement and Care Center for taking such good care of Joe this past year.

The funeral will be held at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 504 N Camden Drive, Beverly Hills on September 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints’ Episcopal Church or to a charity of your choice.

It was such an honor to share a table with Joe Gardiner at the All Saints' Sages Luncheons. He was a delight to be around, and a joy to know. Rest in peace, dear friend. You will be missed.
