Kenneth (Ken) D. Stevens of Cross Lanes, WV, passed away on August 10th, 2017. Before his death, Ken was a beloved husband and father who touched the lives of people across the country through his involvement in the Barbershop Harmony Society as a 38-year member. Over the years he was involved in several quartets both casually and competitively and was a member of both the Kanawha Kordsmen Chorus in Charleston and the Thundertones Chorus in Huntington. He spent years in various board member positions for both choruses. He was a member of the district events team for the Johnny Appleseed District of the Barbershop Harmony Society. He was inducted into the Johnny Appleseed District Hall of Fame in 2013. In January of 2017, he competed in the first International Senior Chorus Competition as part of JAD’s Vocal Seniority Chorus, and achieved his dream of not only competing on an International Stage but winning the Championship with his chorus.
Ken was employed with the Department of Environmental Protection for 18 years. He was a dedicated employee who loved his position with the State and always spoke very highly of his co-workers, many of whom he developed close friendships with. He was also a member of Cross Lanes United Methodist Church and a valuable part of the church choir.
Ken is preceded in death by his mother, Arlene Jacobs, his father, Ralph Stevens, and his first wife, Deborah Stevens. He leaves behind his wife, Sharon Stevens; three children: Jessica Virtz, Jennifer Stevens, and Jason Stevens and wife Valerie; four grandchildren, Alexander Virtz, Zachary Virtz, Collin Stevens, and Trevor Stevens; siblings Kirk Stevens, Kathy Baker, Kelli DeLong, and Bruce Geyer; special friends Andrew and Michelle Price and a large number of extended family members.
Memorial service will be 11am Saturday, August 19th, 2017 at the Cross Lanes United Methodist Church with Pastor Gary Nelson and Pastor Jim Walther officiating.

I knew Ken from work at the DEP. I first met Ken when he was pulling computer cable through the ceiling for the DAQ at the office building next to Wendy's near the Capitol. Ken was working alone, going up and down the ladder with no one to help, and I commented to him that he had a hard job, but Ken did seem to care that the job was hard. Then I knew Ken from the Barber Shop Quartet. Ken was a good guy and will sorely be missed by the DAQ and DEP. My heart goes out to Ken family's family. John Legg and is many DAQ friends.

Dear 'Sharon' and family ( you guys have always been so inclusive . . . I don't want to miss mentioning anybody) --
Words cannot express our sadness over Ken's passing. We will always remember his laughter, his kindness, his cheerful willingness to play pinochle (despite occasional trouncings), but most of all, the love and care he always showed to his family. You and your family, Sharon, have always given us so much joy -- we can see Ken's face shining even now as he's singing in heaven! We love you all.
