Russell Sage Broadway, 96, died on August 11, 2017, at Methodist Hospital in Olive Branch, MS. He was born June 11, 1921, to parents Olivia Allison and Clement Martin Broadway on "Shinpoch Hill," a DeSoto County landmark located two miles west of Lewisburg, where Byhalia and "old" Craft roads intersected and named for his great aunt and uncle, and original land owners, Captain William H. Shinpoch and his wife Ann Eliza.
Russell graduated from Olive Branch High School and served in the United States Army in the Phillipines during World War II. After the war, he came back home to "Shinpoch Hill" to continue farming and build the family grocery store. In 1950 he married the love of his life, Lynn Pulliam of Moro, AR. They spent 43 short years together before Lynn's passing in 1993. Russell retired from the grocery business in 1994 to spend more time with his two grandsons and enjoy his favorite pastime, ballroom dancing. Or just dancing, period.
Russell is survived by his two children, Lucy Formby of Hernando and Phillip Broadway of Mt. Pleasant, MS.; two grandsons, Dr. John Patton Formby of Santa Fe, NM and John Phillip Broadway of Marion, AR.; and sister, Ruth Howard of Germantown, TN. He also leaves behind his beloved pug, Miss Honey Bee (Missy B) Broadway.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Lucy Lynn Snell, Katherine (Singie) Broadway and Samuel Thomas Broadway, all of DeSoto County, MS.
The family would like to thank, from the bottom of our hearts, Teresa Smith of Mt. Pleasant, MS, the wonderful woman who helped care for Russell during the final four years of his life and came to love him as we did. We will be eternally grateful for all the love, attention and compassion she gave him each day.
