LACKEY, Gwendolyn Settlemyre, of Mechanicsville, Va., went to be with her Lord on August 16, 2017. She was born December 8, 1928 in Hickory, N.C., the daughter of the late Phillip A. and Genette Settlemyre. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Miles Lackey-whom she married on May 21, 1949 in Hickory-and a grandson, Brian A. George. She is survived by her son Stephen Randall Lackey (Angela), and her daughter, Gwyneth L. George (Frank); two grandsons, William A. George and Stephen A. Lackey; a granddaughter, Jeanette G. Whitcomb (Nathan); and a great-grandson, Joseph George-Thomas.
She moved to Norfolk in 1960 with her husband and children and became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school. She was a secretary at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She began working at Virginia National Credit Union as a teller in 1960, and continued working in the banking field in several areas including branch manager, until retirement from Bank of America in 1996. She continued to be very active in the church, the AKC Kennel Club, and The Moose Club.
The family will receive friends from 9-9:45 a.m., Monday, August 21, at Woody Funeral Home-Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, Va. 23116, where her funeral service will follow at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Gwen's memory to your local food bank.
