Thomas Leon Phelps Sr., 75, of Mapleton, Illinois, passed away Friday, August 18, 2017 at his residence. He was born on January 18, 1942 in Mattoon, Illinois to Garl and Gertrude (Nelson) Phelps. He married Bonnie L. Mueller on October 5, 1963 in Paxton, Illinois. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jason (Susan) Phelps of Tucson, Arizona and Thomas (Dianna) Phelps Jr. of Greenwood, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Caleb, Samuel Hannah and Margaret Phelps, Travis (Amanda) Banks,Trevor Banks and Tanner Curry; three great grandchildren, Arthur Sutton, Ryden and Marley Banks; one brother, Richard (DeeJay) Phelps of Mercer Island, Washington and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joan Bays.
Tom was a truck driver working for Advanced Trucking and was a farmer. He loved the land and working outdoors. He was a master model ship and airplane creator. He loved restoring Volkswagen automobiles and was a talented mechanic. Tom was a member of the National Rife Association. He was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Bartonville. Tom was also a U.S. Navy Veteran.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, August 26, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church. The Rev. Michael Jones will officiate. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday, August 26, 2017 from 9:30am until 11:00 am. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery. The Davison Fulton Bartonville Chapel is handling arrangements.
