Louise Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2017.

COLUMBIA - Louise Yelton Davis passed on to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 26, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Loran Marvin Yelton and Jincy Stanton Yelton and was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Thomas W. Davis, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Jincy Vaitkunas (Jim), her son, Tom Davis, Jr. (Brenda), her sister, Janie Catalano; grandchildren Michele Boulware, Christie Corbett, Mallory Vaitkunas, Angela Wright and Tony Vaitkunas; and six great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. She was a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother, who listened to us with intelligence, love, and empathy. She was predeceased by brothers, L.M. Yelton and Grayson Yelton.

Louise was born in Eastover, South Carolina, on January 3, 1922, and graduated from Lower Richland High School and Winthrop College. She was an avid Clemson fan.

She taught first grade during most of her 30 years in Richland School District One and often mentioned the satisfaction of watching children learn to read. While teaching at Watkins Elementary, Louise became part of a special group of friends who met once a month for food, talk, laughter and loving support. After her retirement she continued giving to the community by delivering Meals on Wheels and teaching adults to read as well as visiting and taking meals to house-bound friends.

Louise was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia and of Women’s Circle #8, where she developed friendships that meant a lot to her even as she became less active in the community. For many years she was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she had cherished friends, taught Sunday School and was actively involved with the Women of the Church, including being a Circle chairperson.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of Brookdale Senior Living of Columbia and Lighthouse Hospice Group for making Louise’s final years comfortable. They also want to thank the ministers and members of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia who visited Louise faithfully and gave her spiritual comfort. And a special thanks to her close friend and neighbor Martha.

The family requests that memorials be sent to one of the organizations important to Louise, the Alzheimers Foundation of America and Harvest Hope Food Bank.

A memorial service will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, September 7, 2017. The family will receive friends from 11 until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A private family burial service is planned at Greenlawn Memorial Park on Garners Ferry Road, Columbia.

Dear Tommy and Jincy, Your mother was one of my dearest Cousins. You have my thoughts and prayers at this time. I will always remember her as a special family member whom I looked up to as a child as she was a teenager then and as an adult she was a dear friend. She continued to call me or send me notes until she could no longer do it. With Love, Nan Yelton Bishop
