Charles Douglas Johnson, 78, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2017 at the Beckley VA Medical Center.
Born on December 15, 1938 at Cunard, he was the son of the late John Lewis and May Belle Sexton Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was of the Baptist faith. He was a retired construction superintendent for Vecellio and Grogan in Beckley, WV and Ranger Construction in West Palm Beach, FL. In 1956 he graduated from Fayetteville High School and served in the US Army for nine years, with a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966, and had been stationed in Germany. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed working on cars and playing the guitar.
He was the last of his immediate family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen Swanigan Johnson of Fayetteville; two sons: Richard Lewis “Joey” Johnson and wife, Stephanie of Winfield, WV, and Jonathan Michael Johnson of Fort Bragg, NC; one daughter: Robin Ledford and husband, Rick of Fayetteville; grandchildren: Nick (Kristin) Ledford, Eric (Jodi) Johnson, and Jamie (Alicia) Johnson; six great-grandchildren; and his dog: Charlee.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Thursday, August 31 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Pastor Jackie Pittman officiating.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 12 PM to 2 PM at the funeral home.
