Elizabeth Otero de Munich

January 2nd 1927 – September 9th 2017

Elizabeth Otero (Doña Eli, Abuelita Eli, “Tuta”) was born January 2nd 1927 in Ciales, Puerto Rico to Cristobal Otero and Altagracia Ortega.

Altagracia, who widowed when Elizabeth was very young, passed away when she was 11 years of age. Elizabeth was raised from that point by her grandmother and one of her uncles.

Elizabeth was a talented seamstress. She eventually developed this talent into a business, which later turned into a side hobby. Elizabeth also enjoyed dancing and as a teen she would sneak out to go dancing and see her boyfriend, Jose Munich (Cachi). Jose and Elizabeth ended up getting married in October 26th 1944, she was 17 years old at the time. They were married for 39 years. (Elizabeth widowed in 1983 after Cachi’s passing).

Jose and Elizabeth had 4 children; Iris, Jose Luis, Roberto & Nereida. They also have 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren & 6 great-great grandchildren.

Elizabeth, “Tuta” as her grandkids called her, enjoyed being with family. She especially enjoyed the milestones of life such as; family celebrations, weddings an birthdays, which she always remembered every single one. “Tuta” was a great cook. Certainly, her specialty was Puerto Rican food. She would ask us “Que tu quieres que te haga?” -What to do you want me to make you?-, and she would always please us with yummy food.

For Elizabeth, faith was very important. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23.

"The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;

he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul.

He leads me in right paths for his names sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil;

for you are with me; your rod and your staff – they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

all the days of my life;

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long."

She prayed the Rosary every day; and she would hold gatherings to pray the Rosary after people from her town passed away.

Elizabeth was a very loving and giving person who found happiness in helping others. Her greatest accomplishment in life was educating her children to be respectful and hardworking people.

-She was preceded by: her husband Jose Munich, son Jose Luis Munich and grandson Xavier Gonzalez.

-She was survived by: daughters Iris Munich and Nerida Perez, son Roberto Munich, as well as, her 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
