Janie Wagstaff Stone, age 97, of the Plain View Community was called to her eternal home on Friday, September 15, 2017 at Cornerstone Nursing and Rehabilitation.
She was born to J. Edward (Ed) Wagstaff of Roxboro, NC and Janie Blane Wagstaff of Halifax County, Virginia on January 29, 1920 in her mother’s home place near the North Carolina-Virginia line. They lived in Virginia five-years before moving to Roxboro, NC. The family farmed the hard rocky soils of Person County until 1936, when they moved to Plain View community near Dunn, NC. She graduated from Plain View High School in 1938. On November 11, 1944 she married Robert L. Stone, son of John R. and Ellen Williford Stone.
She is also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Robert L. Stone, son, Donnie Stone, daughter-in-law Sunnie A. Stone, brother, Billy Wagstaff (Trudie) and sister, Margaret Draughon.
Janie loved to garden, play Scrabble and Rook, but most of all she loved to read, so much so, that most of the time the local library ran out of new books and couldn’t keep up with her passion. She was a long time member of Lee’s Chapel Church, member of the Women’s Auxiliary and Sunday School.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Ray Stone and wife Carolyn of Dunn, NC and Dale Stone and wife Marie of Durham, NC; grandchildren, Renee VanderVorst (Jeffrey) of Texas, Kurt Stone (Kimber) of Greenville, Angela Stone Richardson (David) of Cary and Tara Stone of Dunn; great grandchildren, Alli, Austin, Kaleb, Kourtney, Kallie, Kassie, Lauren, Jackson, Kaitlyn and Ryan; and numerous other loving family and friends. She was a role-model and mentor for so many in and out of the family circle.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Monday, September 18, 2017 at Lee’s Chapel O.F.W.B. Church, Dunn N.C with Reverend Ricky Warren and Dr. Brad Williamson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of Ray and Carolyn Stone, 7411 Plain View Hwy. Interment will follow at Lee’s Chapel Williford Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cornerstone Nursing for the outstanding care provided Mrs. Stone during the time she was a resident.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Lee’s Chapel O.F.W.B. Church, 4948 Plain View Highway Dunn, NC 28334.
