i am sitting here reading through the remembrances of you and the tears are flowing. I wish you were here to hug me and comfort me as you always did. Your constant support, gentleness and love got me through some of the toughest times of my life. I can/t
express how much I still miss you every day. Thank you for all that you did for me and my family. You were always willing to put your life on hold to make mine better. Those things did not go unnoticed, but I am not sure I expressed enough gratitude while you were still here to hear it. I love you Daddy, with all my heart. I often find I am at a loss without you.

Am so fortunate to have crossed paths with Earle. From day one (Sept. 1977) we became family-treated me like a son. He was so thoughtful and well spoken. Loved his knowledge of architecture and ability to construct whatever he put his mind to. Many memories still fresh from Illinois Ave.to the A-frame above the Ohio river. Seemed he knew something about everything from A to Z. Easy to see that Maria, Caroline and Laura love him a lot. Thank You Earle for all the time we got to share. Happy Birthday soon! Wayne Hendrix

I spent much of my childhood with the entire Hodges family. I found extreme comfort being accepted as a surrogate daughter coming from a family where I was the only girl with two older brothers. Our families were constantly together and celebrated each and every holiday and birthday as one ... either in Louisville or with extended family in Grayson County. We gathered for church, weddings, various functions, and, unfortunately, times of sorrow. I have fond memories of my Uncle who willingly agreed to be the only adult to participate in badminton, jarts (totally unacceptable in today's world) and softball games on the lawn. He crafted a life-sized box kite ... color-ladened as it glowed in the brilliant sunlight ... which he successfully launched into the afternoon breeze, much to our amazement and delight. He purchased a Model A in disrepair that he brought back to life. Now ... I'm not claiming he restored that old jalopy to its original condition ... but he did proudly load us into his antique car to join the local Club for an old fashioned picnic on the bank of Bear Grass Creek. These are just a few examples of the memories I hold dear. Uncle Earle ... I will always love you.

My condolences Laura, I just had the pleasure of living with MR. Earle for a week, however, those 7 days were enough to make me realize the magnificent person he was. Whatever you need, I am for you. Strong hugs and blessings.

Richard (Dickie) & Parveen Garr

As a young boy, I really enjoyed being with or being around Uncle Earle and Aunt Loretta and my cousins Maria, Carolyn, and Laura. It was always a special time for me.

I am Uncle Earl's favorite nephew. How do I know this? Well, when I was 8 or 9, we were all at a family get together. At some point, I noticed Uncle Earle sitting at a table and reading a newspaper. For some reason, I approached Uncle Earle and declared to him: "You know, Uncle Earle, I believe I'm your favorite nephew." I then waited anxiously for his reply and waited and waited. After a while he looked at me out of the corner of his eye for a brief moment, and then continued reading the newspaper. Sosince he did not express any clear disagreement to what I had said, then it is perfectly clear that I was and am his favorite nephew!

Uncle Earle was different than anyone else I knew, and he made important impressions on me when I was at a very impressionable age. Through him I was exposed to new and different things and activities. At that time in my life, he was the only person I knew who had earned a college degree. He enjoyed photography and showed me how to process the camera film. He expanded my knowledge and interest in astronomy. He introduced me to archeryas a recreational sport. We went swimming together at the YMCA. He liked music and reading. He was a classy gentleman and always spoke intelligently. He was energetic and industrious. I remember how we worked together nailing down the tar paper and shingles for the roof on the new extension at Uncle Earle's and Aunt Loretta's home on Illinois Aveand that's where I also had exciting fun riding on their big lawn mower to cut the grass on their expansive yard. And all the while, dear Aunt Loretta fretted that I was in mortal danger on the lawn mower.
Whether he realized it or not, or whether it was intentional or not, Uncle Earle played a vital mentoring role in my life from the time I was a little boy. He was someone I trusted and respected deeply. And I loved him dearly.

As I have shared on several occasions with my wife, Parveen, whatever I have become in life, is due in large measure to Uncle Earle's influence on me. Thank you, Uncle Earle, for giving me positive experiences and inspirational direction. I also thank you for your patriotic service to our Nation. I will always strive to honor your memory.

May you now rest in comfort and in heavenly peace in God's loving arms for eternity.
God Bless You, Uncle Earle.

I first met my cousin Earle through a letter he sent to my dad in '94. Since he had recently passed away, the letter was forwarded to me. Earle's dad was my dad's favorite cousin. After that we started our friendship by mail, e-mails and phone calls. I finally met him when he and his sister Ruth visited us a few years later in Arkansas and it was a wonderful time for all of us. I don't think I have ever met a gentler or kinder man than Earle and I will treasure all my memories of him always. He was so special and I loved him dearly. My heartfelt sympathy to all his family.

Mr Earle was such a gentle soul. He always welcomed my daughters and I and stopped by once to patronize their lemonade stand. I'm certain he spread love and kindness to many throughout his rich life. My thoughts are with you all at this time of transition.

Earle and I enjoyed quite a few cups of coffee together. I was always struck by his earnest pursuit of truth and meaning. He was always all ways sorting through ideas to bring some sense of order to the chaos we call life. He had a rich, variegated story to draw from, making frequent allusion to this or that bit of literature or history or world affairs, which only made it more frustrating to him when words would not come easily, although he held his own quite well even so. I shall miss those cups of coffee with Earle, and the conversations about his children and grandchildren, whom he dearly loved and spoke of so proudly.

It was my absolute honor to be counted as one of his many friends. He never failed to keep me entertained with his knowledge of almost anything! We painted together and even when he no longer attended our class, we continued to take time for each other. I will miss his smiling face and wonderful stories of his family that he loved dearly. I sincerely thank his family for keeping me updated with his health and letting me share these last few days of his life. Diane

Intelligent, seeker of truth, sharer of wisdom, carer of family, soft spoken, twinkle in his eye, fun loving, talented, handy, handsome, could sweep you off your feet when you least expect it. . Hard working, adventurous, lifelong learner. We shared family moments on the farm, bonfires, cutting Ne. wood, picking up Ky walnuts, Nutcracker. Gracious, accepting, entertaining, patient when I'm sleeping on the plane, and just about missed Louisville. Enjoyed Laura's music together. So loved his family, and showed pride in them Such a heritage to raise these three unique and wonderful daughters with Loretta. May you all know the Presence and Peace of our Creator, Savior and Sustainer. Much love, Nancy Stauffer

I have so many fond memories of Uncle Earle while growing up and spending time with the family especially during summer visits. He was always kind and soft spoken. I last saw him in November. I'm not sure he really knew who I was but called me "sweetie" anyway. My heart breaks for his daughters, my cousins and Loretta, my aunt. I used to think that those IBM punch cards we used to write on were the neatest thing! Love all of you so much.
