Velma McDonald Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2017.

Velma Jo Joiner McDonald, 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday, September 28, 2017 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Ms. McDonald was born in Houston, Texas on July 27, 1927, the second of four children born to Robert Isam and Gladys Day Joiner. After graduating from El Campo H. S. in 1945, where she proudly served as twirler and drum major of the band, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert, in San Marcos, Texas. Five years later, she gave birth to her only child, Robert Burns McDonald III.

Velma is survived by her daughter-in-law, JoAnn Montes McDonald, her much adored granddaughter, Amber Star McDonald Donihoo, one great granddaughter, Alexandra Elise Donihoo, and a great grandson, Robert Aidan Donihoo. She is also survived by her sister, Margie Reber; her sisters-in-law, Irene McDonald, Leotha McDonald, and Billie Joiner as well as several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Ms. McDonald was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Burns McDonald, Jr., her son, Robert; her sister, Robbie; her brother, Gerald and two half-sisters, Margarite and Virginia.

Velma was a pioneer as a woman in the work world. She began her first job at the local movie theater when she was only fourteen, selling tickets and making popcorn. In the 1950's she was hired as a credit manager and later, a store manager for Sears and Roebuck; she also worked as a teller and teller supervisor at several south Texas banks. In her 40's, she applied to the U.S. Postal Service and was hired as one of the first female letter carriers, walking miles across Portland, Texas before carriers used jeeps to deliver mail there. In her final years with the postal service, she became the assistant Postmaster in Portland and later retired as the Postmaster of Center Point, Texas.

Velma loved the Lord and lived life as a Christian. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family telling stories and laughing together. She never met a stranger and was the first to extend a helping hand to friends and family. Velma was generous with her time and resources such as when she used her professional skills to help establish the Ingleside-on-the-Bay volunteer fire department in the 1990's. She enjoyed cooking and was known far and wide for sharing her candy and desserts.

A private family memorial is planned for a future date. Ms. McDonald will be inurned in Garden of Memories cemetery in El Campo, Texas.
