Gene DIX Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2017.

Gene A Dix passed away peacefully from complications of cancer at his home in Sweet Home, Oregon on September 22, 2017, at the age of 75.

Gene was born on May 31, 1942, in Beedville, Arkansas to parents Alfred and Lula (Goss) Dix. After high school, Gene married Sherline and the two moved to Oregon shortly thereafter. They were blessed with two daughters, Victoria and LeeAnn. Gene and Sherline later separated. In 1978, Gene married Judith Pell and he raised her three children as if they were his own. Gene and Judith later separated.

Gene retired from Columbia Steel Casting where he worked for many years as either a welder or crane operator. In his early years, he loved camping, hunting, and coaching baseball. For the last 10 years or so, Gene loved chatting on the computer or on his CB radio. He made many friends all over and to them he was known as "Big Kitty".

Gene was a wonderful man with a huge heart and will be truly missed.

Gene is survived by four daughters: Victoria Rogers of Portland, LeeAnn Wray (Charles) of Beaverton, Jackie Stricklan (Sonny) of Sweet Home, and Stevie Pell of Junction City; brothers: Robert Dix (Molly) of Arkansas; Charles Dix (Francis) of Prineville, OR and Ray Dix (Ann) of Alabama; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gene is preceded in death by his son Michael Pell of Gales Creek; brothers: Harold Dix of Portland, Lester Dix of Portland, Lewis Dix of Wilsonville, and Richard Dix of Portland; and sister, Doris Weston of Arkansas.

A potluck memorial gathering will be held in St Johns Community Center, 8427 N Central St, Portland, OR, on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 10:30AM.

A Graveside Committal Service will be held following the memorial gathering at Skyline Memorial Gardens, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, OR, on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 1:30PM.

A heartfelt message from one of Gene's daughters -
I've been thinking about you a lot. My happiest memories of you were when you and mom were getting divorced and you took my sister and me to Pier Park. You wanted to let us know how much you loved us and that even though you weren't living with us you'd always be there for us. No matter what. And it was true. You were a strong steady and reliable presence in our lives. You acted as coach for our baseball team and spent a lot of time practicing with us. I guess what I need you to know, is that you meant the world to me and just because I wasn't there for you doesn't mean I didn't care for you. I also want to thank you for marrying Judy. She was like a second mom and I've always wanted to let you know how much she meant to me and thank you for putting her and my siblings in my life. My life was richer and fuller for that special gift you gave me. So thank you daddy. I miss you and love you so much. Rest in peace.

My condolences to all the family. I've known Gene for many, many years. I'm just so glad I got to see and have a short visit with him on his birthday party. He told me a little story about hearing Big foot while he was relaxing in the backyard this summer. He made me laugh, but he really believed he heard it. I love you Gene and I'm going to miss your stories. Your at peace now....
