Alton Wayne Lewis, 79, of Stuarts Draft, passed away on Friday, September 29, 2017 at his residence with his daughters by his side. He was born on August 9, 1938, a son of the late Alton Norris and Nellie (Patterson) Lewis.
Wayne proudly served in the United States Army. He was self-employed with his business, Okaye Amusement. Wayne was a member of Sherando United Methodist Church, a past Master of the Greenville Augusta 111 Masonic Lodge and a 32nd Degree Mason and was the past President of Sherando Ruritans. He was a kind hearted person that would do anything he could to help someone in need. Wayne was a devoted family man and greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and his wife, Shirley were caretakers for many over the years.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Lewis; children, Kathryn Wells and Timothy Bower and sisters, Gayle Beard and Betty Wampler.
Survivors include his children, Rebecca Skillman and her husband, Jesse, Sandy Hunt and her husband, Barry, Wayland Bower and his wife, Sandra and Joseph Bower all of Stuarts Draft; ten grandchildren, Marshall Thompson, Scarlett Skillman, Joshua Baska, Joseph Hunt, Justin Hunt, Amber Bower, Justin Bower, Kelly Buchanan, Christopher Bower, Jason Wells and Lee Wells; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers, Merle Lewis and his wife, Roberta of Stuarts Draft and Garry Lewis and his wife, Donna of Waynesboro; sister, Linda Chaffins and her husband, Doug of Powhatan; special uncle, Maynard Patterson; special nephew, Nathanael Chaffins; as well as extended family and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017 at Sherando United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2022 Howardsville Turnpike, Stuarts Draft.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Wayne's memory to the Augusta Health Foundation, Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 100, Fishersville, or the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah, his nurses Jody Warwick and Monique McEniry and his friend, Randy DeTrinis for their wonderful care of Wayne and his family.
