Wayne Edward Peterson, 92, formerly of Peoria, passed away at 1:10 am on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at the Hopedale Medical Complex Nursing Home in Hopedale, Illinois. He was born in Peoria, Illinois on January 20, 1925 to James Albert and Lola Mae Peterson. He married Dorothy June Leroy on January 9, 1944 in Peoria and they were together for 66 years. They had three children. He was a Stationary Engineer, retiring from Hiram Walker & Sons in 1981. He enjoyed many years camping and fishing with his family and especially his winters in Florida with Dorothy after retirement.
He was a WW II U.S. Army veteran and served over a year in post war Germany. He excelled in high school sports, especially football. One of his duties in Germany was to play exhibition football for the Army including playing twice in the Berlin Stadium alongside former college and professional players.
Wayne is survived by one daughter, Billie (Dennis) Lehmann of Mechanicsburg, IL, one son, Stephen (Jane) Peterson of Dahinda, IL, son-in-law Robert Wagner of Springfield, IL, granddaughters Stephanie (Lehmann) Hughes, Kimberly Peterson, Elizabeth Wagner and Alison Wagner, grandsons, Christopher Lehmann and Marc Peterson, great granddaughters, Emma Hughes, Scarlett Peterson and Simone Peterson and great grandsons, Ethan and Aidan Hughes. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lloyd, one sister, Anne, his wife, Dorothy and daughter, Kathleen Wagner.
The family would like to say thank you to the staff at the Hopedale Medical Complex Nursing Home for their kind and excellent care with special thanks to Head Nurse Tim Sondag and Brittany Stedman for always being there when we needed them.
Services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Davison-Fulton Woolsey Wilton Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Arnold will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, at the Davison-Fulton Woolsey Wilton Funeral Home, 2408 W. Willow Knolls Dr., Peoria, IL. Burial will be in the Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. Memorials may be made in Wayne's name to the University United Methodist Church, Peoria where he and Dorothy were lifetime members. You may create an online condolence at www.woolsey-wilton.com.

Uncle Wayne,
You will be missed. Wayne was my favorite and always reminded me of Dad and Grandpa. Now he is with them, Lola, Aunt Dorothy and Ann. My condolences to the whole family and may you be comforted through this loss.
