Carroll Gwendolyn Price, 73, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2017. She was born on January 25, 1944 to Carroll Oswa and Mary Ella (Hudson) Tanner in Charleston, Mississippi.
Preceding her in death are her parents Carroll Tanner and Mary Hudson Harris; step-father Spencer W. Hervey, Sr.; brother Isaac Harris and sister-in-law Sandra Tanner.
Born in Charleston Mississippi, Carroll accepted Christ at an early age. She was baptized at New Town Baptist Church in Charleston Ms. Carroll moved to Gary Indiana at the age of thirteen and soon joined New Friendship Baptist Church.
Carroll graduated from Froebel High School in Gary Indiana in 1961. She then graduated from Ivy Tech Community College where she attained a certificate in nursing, sat before state board (NCLEX-PN) and was awarded to practice as a License Practical Nurse (LPN).
Shortly after graduation, she enlisted in the United States Women’s Army Corp (WAC). She served 34 years (active and reserve) retiring as a Master Sargent (MSG/E8). She also retired from Civil Services as a GS. She served in Vietnam and Desert Storm and Desert Shield Wars. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal among several others during her service.
She moved to Seagoville, Texas in 1985 and was the first black woman crowned Miss Senior Seagoville in 2015. Carroll was a romantic that loved music, reading romantic novels and was a very talented and crafty person and loved quilting and ceramics. She taught ceramic class at Seagoville City Senior Center for several years.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son David (Jennifer) Price, daughter Djana Williams; grandchildren: Brittany Price (Angel) Charles, Brandii Price, Brandon Price, Sr. and Payzlii Wilson; great-grandchildren: Serenity Charles, Landen Mills and Brandon Price, Jr.; siblings James Tanner, Jacqueline (Robert) Perry, Spencer (Sabrina) Hervey, Jr., Steven (Lerdine) Hervey, Cherrie (William) Mitchell, Cheryl Freeman, Lewis (Carolyn) Harris III, and Arthur (Carole) Harris; siblings: Chris Tanner, Louie Tanner, Michael Tanner, Mona Baptiste and Stanley Tanner and a host of extended family members and friends that will miss her dearly.
Carroll was an amazing WOMAN…she worked many jobs during her lifetime, with her first job at age 16 at the Spiegal Catalog Co.. She also worked at the Westville Mental Hospital, Gary Police department as admissive assistant to the Chief of Police and General Services for the City of Gary Indiana. She is the strongest person I know and love.
A Celebration of Life will be held on 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Greater Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church 8335 Bruton Rd. Dallas, TX 75217. Carroll will be inurned, with full military honors, at 2:00 p.m. at DFW National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy Dallas, TX. 75211
