Lois Rogers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2017.

Lois Ellen Rogers, of Raleigh, passed away on October 16, 2017 at the age of 78.

A native of Raleigh, she went to Myrtle Underwood Grammar School, graduated from Broughton High School and attended Peace College. She worked over 25 years as an administrative assistant at Jolly's Jewelers of North Hills, Henry J. Young's Jewelry, and finally at Bailey's Fine Jewelry.
Lois Ellen was an avid gardener and a true pioneer of gardening organically. Her use of chicken manure was no secret, and could be smelled from blocks away from her house on Cowper Drive. Her gardens didn't just grow, but flourished. Her ability to turn a barren patch of soil into a menagerie of wonder and beauty was a true testament of her love and skill. To find her digging in the dirt at the home of a neighbor or friend wouldn't be unusual, because her passion was a gift she'd share with anyone who'd ask or let her.

Her favorite place on earth was spending time at her beach cottage at Atlantic Beach. It was the place where she spent many summers with her children and family. Lois Ellen's communal spirit set the tone and atmosphere of a home known for its open door policy. And dropping by to sit on the porch and visit was always welcomed and encouraged. In her later years she took an active role on behalf of the feral cats in the community. In partnership with neighbors and a rescue organization, she volunteered much of her time and donated many dollars to this cause that meant so much to her.

Lois Ellen's most endearing quality was her gift of making and maintaining friendships from all walks of life and spanning many generations. Some of her dearest and most cherished friendships began when she was just a child. She had a heart of gold and was always there to help those in need. And she never waited or felt she needed an invitation to do so. Her propensity in this regard speaks volumes of the woman she was and what her children strive to be. She brought so much joy to everyone she touched. And that joy will be missed but never forgotten.

She is predeceased by her parents, Carey Pegram Rogers and Rachel Godwin Rogers; and her sister, Carey Oliver Rogers McFadyen. And will be lovingly remembered and missed by her children, Dillard Andrew of Raleigh, Joe Andrews of Raleigh, Sister Andrews Bragdon of Portland, Oregon, Marilyn Andrews Pharr of Charlotte, Mary Andrews of Raleigh; her sister, Rebecca Rogers Walker of Kinston, NC; and her 9 grandchildren.

A very special thank you to Roberta, Kathleen and Tracey for their amazing kindness, love and care.

A small private service for family and close friends is being planned and will be announced at a later time
