Jean Newland, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and faithful child of God, passed away at the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick Thursday, October 19. Born in 1944 in Pasadena, California, she is survived by her husband of 54 years, Mike; a son Kevin and wife Iraida of Lakewood, NJ; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A daughter, Kelly, predeceased her in 2015.
Jean's early education was followed by graduate work at Drexel University in 1975, where she received a Masters degree in library science. She became the Associate Director of the Wharton School library at the University of Pennsylvania, retiring in 2009. She and Mike moved to the Lockwood Folly community in Supply in 2010.
Her interests were varied and community-oriented. She taught a Pilates class for a number of years. Her lovely singing voice began in a group named "Collage," and she participated in the Holden Beach Chapel choir and the Sea Notes chorale. She organized a yearly spiritual retreat for women of the Chapel.
A gracious hostess as wife of a Campbell's Soup Company executive, additional notable achievements include serving as Second Vice-President of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, and enhancing the lives of others. She and Mike sponsored a young, crippled orphan in Africa, providing for his education and medical care. A trip to Africa was a highlight she greatly enjoyed.
This remarkable lady will be remembered by many for her vivacity, empathy, and service to her family, church, and friends. Services will be held Sunday, October 22, at 4 o'clock in the Holden Beach Chapel.
