John Hancock Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 21, 2017.

John Butler Hancock passed away peacefully on October 20, 2017 at his home in Sugar Land, Texas at the age of 89.

John was born on February 13, 1928 in Houston, Texas to Henry Ralph Hancock and Elsie Lois Butler Hancock. He graduated from University of Texas at Austin with a degree in engineering. John served in the US Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Sergeant. After leaving the US Army, he began working for Mobil Oil in Beaumont, Texas. Over his 33 year career with Mobil he held a number of management positions, making many lifelong friends in the industry. After retiring from Mobil, John continued his career in the energy sector with Quest Energy. At the age of 80, John earned his investment advisor license, working for Incomar Investments until the time of his passing.

John was active throughout his life and enjoyed golf and bowling. At the age of 79, he bowled a 279 making 11 strikes in a row. He loved to travel with his wife, Linda, making numerous trips to Europe, Mexico, and many venues throughout the United States. He was an avid fan of the Texas Longhorns and the Houston Astros, cheering his Astros on to the World Series this year.

John was active in the Fort Bend County Republican Party and The Exchange Club of Fort Bend. He was an active member of the Sugar Land First Methodist Church where he regularly attended services, Sunday school, and bible study. John enjoyed his exchanges with the other members and made many friends through the church. He had a smile and a joke when you met, and always loved to turn a stranger into a new friend.

He is survived by son Scott Hancock, son Mark Hancock and wife Lizabeth, and daughter Kimberly Dow. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of thirty years, Melinda (Linda) Hancock. He leaves behind many cherished friends and relatives.

A visitation will be held at The Settegast-Kopf Co. @ Sugar Creek from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Tuesday, October 24, 2017.

A Memorial Service and celebration of John's life is scheduled for 2:00pm on Wednesday, October, 25, 2017 at Sugar Land First Methodist Church, with a reception to follow at Sugar Land First Methodist Church, 431 Eldridge Rd., Sugar Land, TX 77478.

I knew Butler better by reputation than by experience as he was a generation removed and many miles away. I am nonetheless saddened at his passing since his reputation was golden. Though the family is sad, he is happy (and exquisitely so) as he beholds our Savior, Jesus Christ, face to face.
