John Pool Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2017.

John David Pool, 82, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 21, 2017. David's family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at a memorial service on Wednesday, October 25, at 3:00 p.m. at Riley Funeral Home in Hamilton.

David was born on October 23, 1935, to John Milton (Mickey) Pool and Margaret Love Pool in Coleman, Texas. They moved to Plainview and later to Dumas where David graduated from Dumas High School.
He attended Texas Tech, where he participated in many campus activities including cheerleading, band, and Saddle Tramps, and enjoyed being an active member of Phi Gamma Delta. He received his BS degree in Agriculture Economics in 1957. After a short time in the corporate world working for Panther Oil in Fort Worth, he returned to Texas Tech for graduate school. When his father suffered a heart attack, David returned to Dumas to help the family with their farming, ranching, and training racehorses. Eventually, the family sold their property and moved to San Marcos where David became a realtor and built a miniature golf course.

In 1968 David married Carolyn Calvert Millican and adopted her two children, Mike and Melissa. A third child, Rachel, was born to them in 1971. An Eagle Scout himself, David enjoyed being involved with Boy Scouts and coaching Little League baseball.

The family moved to Hamilton in 1978 when they discovered the house of their dreams. Built in 1872, the stone structure with the Texas historical marker represented his love of history. He spent many hours on the restoration of the house.

David and Carolyn did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society for 25 years. He was particularly proud of the Road to Recovery program that he helped to organize and of the men and women who drove cancer patients to receive medical treatment.

David took pride in his Confederate ancestors, and he helped to organize a camp of Sons of Confederate Veterans in Hamilton.

As a member of the Methodist Church, he sang in the choir for several years. He loved all kinds of music and enjoyed playing his guitar and singing. He and Carolyn helped in the organization of Hamilton Civic Theatre, where he had roles in several productions. He enjoyed entertaining people his entire life.

David was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Eric Steven Pool.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; his son, Mike and wife, Kristen; his daughter Melissa Talbert and husband, Dave; his daughter, Rachel; his grandsons Nathan and Jared Pool and Carlton Ross, and granddaughter Caroline Ross; his brother Fletcher Michael Pool.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hamilton Public Library or Hamilton Civic Theatre.

The family extends a special thank you to Barbara Sanders and all the workers at CCS Hospice who enabled him to stay in the comfort of his home.

David and I were room mates at Tech our Freshman and Sophmore years from 1953 to 1955. We pledged Kemas in 1954 and were in the first pledge class of Phi Gamma Delta in the fall of 1954.
David was the best man at our wedding in 1955. Elaine and I last visited with David and Carolyn in June of 2015. Our career paths took very separate paths and locations, but we always exchanged cards and updates a Christmas.
I will always remember David as never, never having a bad day and could pick up his guitar and brighten everyone

We're fairly new in Hamilton and have enjoyed knowing John David and Carolyn. My mother always loved talking with John David when she called to make reservations at the Hamilton Theater. She had never actually met him, but talking to him on the phone was like talking to an old friend. They compared canes and walkers and other silly things. He made my mom laugh and feel special. He and Carolyn are both special folks in Hamilton.

David was a pledge and Phi Gam brother, a very good friend in our Tech years, and an outstanding performer. He was featured in the 1955 Varsity Show production of "Good News," and was lauded highly. My condolences to his wife and family.

A Hamilton favorite of mine, John David was a gifted friend and a beacon in the community. He had a contagious laugh and a rich and sometimes dry sense of humor. We had fun together in the Hamilton Civic Theater. He was a favorite of Catherin Randolph. He and Lambert Little often kept me in stitches. He loved his wonderful family, as all of us who knew them do. Carolyn, Rachel, Mike, Melissa and all he cherished--wishing you comfort, warm memories, and love.
