James Hunter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2017.

COLUMBIA - James Edwin Hunter III entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 23, 2017 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Cathedral on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following in Satterlee Hall. Burial in the churchyard will precede the service.

Mr. Hunter was born in Sumter, S.C. on October 22, 1925, the son of Sara deSaussure Edmunds and James Edwin Hunter, Jr. He attended Columbia public schools, Georgia Tech, and graduated from Clemson in 1949 with a degree in electrical engineering. His college career was interrupted by World War II. At age 17, following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the Marine Corps. He served three years with the Second Marines, engaging in combat on Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. At the end of the war, he served as part of the occupying force in Nagasaki, Japan. He maintained his contacts and love of the Corps throughout his life.

He began his engineering career with Deering Milliken’s research trust and then worked for Harrison Wright in Charlotte. In 1959, he started Hunter and Walden, Inc. He was president of the Charlotte Engineers Society for four years and was recognized by the

association for his distinguished service. Upon his return to South Carolina, he founded Pantech Consulting Engineers in Columbia, a firm that designed power and communication projects throughout the Eastern U.S. and the Middle East.

Jim enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was president of the Charlotte Nature Museum for several terms and was instrumental in bringing the planetarium to that institution. He was also a pilot and had many hours flying the company’s airplane.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Bargmann Hunter; a son, Scott James Hunter (Cathy) of Oakland, CA; a daughter, Caroline H. Klein (Paul) of Walhalla, S.C.; two grandsons, Benjamin N. Hunter and Matthew A. Hunter both of Oakland. Other survivors include sisters, Daisy H. DesPortes of Columbia and Nathalie H. Cook of Kingstree and a brother, Eugene M. Hunter of Columbia. He was predeceased by sisters, Ella H. Davis of Mt. Pleasant and Caroline. H. Maass of Columbia.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that memorials be made to Trinity Cathedral or the Salvation Army.

Miss Betty, So sorry to hear of Mr. Hunter's passing. He is one of "the most unforgettable people" I've ever met. After I got some health issues with my family in MO smoothed out, I called all three numbers I have for you and Jim. Getting no answer, I guessed you and he must be in Walhalla or in Charleston. I started to come by one day, just to check on you both, but again reasoned that you must be out of town for the year-end holidays. I loved hearing him talk so fondly of his adventures in Asia. He is a true patriot. Please, accept my sincerest apologies and my heartfelt condolences.

Betty,
My thoughts and prayers have been with you, since I learned of Jim's death. It was so wonderful getting to know you and Jim on our Bermuda trip, he was a True Gentleman in every way. I know your heart is heavy at this time, but I pray the wonderful memories you have of your precious Jim, will help you through this sad time. God Bless You, Dottie

I had the great good fortune of knowing Jim through Pantech. He was a truly remarkable man; one might say a true Renaissance Man. I will always cherish the evenings at The Oyster Bar, scarfing down oysters, drinking "Green Pepsis"(Heinekens), discussing world affairs and listening to Jim recount the many stories of war and travel.

What is our loss is Heaven's gain! God bless you, Jim Hunter.
