Stephen Scharf Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2017.

Stephen William Scharf – born Bloomington IL 10/28/1937. He was raised by Charles W Scharf in his early years before being adopted by Charles H and Elsie Scharf. After graduating from Bloomington High School, he took some classes at Illinois Wesleyan University before joining the Navy. He spent 4 years in the Navy as a photographer. One of the most memorable moments for him in the Navy was photographing the transfer of the casket "Unknown Soldier of the European Theater" from the USS Blandy to the USS Boston in May 1958. After his Honorable Discharge, he settled into a bartending job at the Jolly Roger Hotel in Bloomington, IL. His best friend's mother introduced him to Sally Ann Bush. They were married 4/6/62. They had 5 children – Deborah Kilmartin (Michael), David Scharf (Deborah), Stephanie Alumbaugh (Randy), Susan Gonzalez (David), and Dana Ivanco (Larry).
Stephen worked at Eureka Williams from August 1966 – March 1994, where he retired in El Paso Texas as a Senior Industrial Engineer.
Stephen and Sally enjoyed several hobbies together, including gardening, golf, rock tumbling, rock trees, and traveling. One of their biggest travel adventures was to Australia in 1998 where the saw the President's Cup. They were both avid readers; hardly a day would go by without a book in their hands.
Stephen and Sally were able to celebrate 50 years of marriage together with a small gathering of family and friends. They were just shy of their 51st anniversary when Sally passed away in March 2013.
He was also preceded in death by Charles W Scharf, Charles H Scharf, Elsie Scharf, Kay Heineman, Adam and Andrew Moseley.
He is survived by his daughters Deborah, Stephanie, Susan, Dana, and Son David; grandchildren Becky, Adam, Jessica, Eric, Zack, Hannah, Jake, Taylor, Justin, Rebekah, and Isabella; great grandchildren Alexis, Michael, Sam, Emerson, and Micah.
Memorial service will be at 1pm Wednesday at St. Matthew's
Lutheran Church, Urbana, with Pastor Robert Rasmus officiating. Cremation accorded by East Lawn Funeral Home, Bloomington.
