Alan Charles Horowitz of Sherman, CT passed away surrounded by family on Thursday October 26, 2017 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Alan was born on October 6, 1955 in Stamford, CT and was 62. He was the son of the late Philip and Martha Horowitz.
Alan had recently retired from the United States Postal Service after 37 year career of being a letter carrier. Early in his career he delivered mail in Darien and New Cannan, the transferred to the Wilton branch. He was involved in all aspects of being a union activist and was elected union president of the Wilton branch, local 5437, many times. When Wilton and Danbury merged together to become branch 363, Alan assumed the position of secretary for the combined branch. In 2013, branch 363 merged with Hartford and became mergered branch 86, Alan became a trustee for the branch. In addition to his trustee duties, he was still shop steward for Wilton as he was for many years. He was also involved with the local community, being the head and running the Wilton Post office food drive, which happens the week before Thanksgiving. This is where residents would leave bags of food at their mailboxes to be picked up by the carriers. This is a separate food drive from the USPS National food drive.
Alan also loved to go to the elementary schools in Wilton on career day and give talks to the kindergarten thru second grade classes, on what it is like to be a "mail man". His favorite part of the whole experience was when he would answer all of the children's questions.
Alan loved all his customers on his mail route. He'd would always remember the joy of watching his customers children grow from babies to college students.
In addition to working for the USPS, he worked part time at the Georgetown Shell where he made friends with everyone who came in. He loved working there too, often referring to it being (for those who remember the Andy Griffin TV show) like Floyd's barber shop, where people would gather to buy their gas and then come in to talk and hang out.
Alan was also a avid fan of the NY Jets and NY Mets, going many times to Florida with his good friends for a week to watch the NY Met's spring training.
Alan is survived by his wife Maria (Haussherr) Horowitz of Sherman, CT, son Philip Horowitz and wife Kim, of Milford, CT and their children Erica and Mason, son Joshua Hororwitz of Bridgeport, CT, 3 step-daughters, Patricia Hughes and husband Jay LaFontaine of Bentonville, AR and their children Benjamin Warfield, Sabrina Warfield and Abigail LaFontaine, Kimberly Mylie and husband Jason, of Sherman, CT, Holly Moore and husband Eric of Rogers, AR and their children Ethan and Alexander, step-son William F. I always knew you, Alan--even years before you became my brother-in-law. We never had a moment together when we didn't find something to laugh about! Your brotherly love helped to me get through my late teens and early twenties intact! Thank you for being there for me and for showing me more fun than I could ever muster up myself. I don't know where you got the boundless energy to drive all over God's green earth and highways! I know you are at peace because you wouldn't have it any other way.
