Debra Foord Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 31, 2017.

Debra (Debbie) Christine Newell, a lifelong resident of Monterey County, passed away unexpectedly on October 28, 2017. Debbie grew up in Pacific Grove, where she attended St. Angela's Grammar School and Pacific Grove High School. She worked for the Herald as a young woman, and went on to become a medical transcriptionist, working for many doctors across the peninsula for decades. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Carmela Newell, and her son Christopher. She is survived by her daughter Nicole, her son-in-law Ryan, her grandchildren Shayla and Reid - in whom she endlessly delighted - and her siblings: Gloria Webster, Mike Newell, Juanita Russo, and Madeleine Head. In addition, she had a large and close-knit extended family, including many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, all of whom she cherished. Debbie loved animals - especially her black lab Rocky, her cat Rose, and giraffes - connecting with friends over Facebook, and enjoying a delicious meal and a good glass of Chardonnay with loved ones. However, spoiling her grandchildren and watching them participate in local sports was her favorite pastime. Services for Debbie will be held on Friday, November 10th at 11 am St. Angela's Church with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to your favorite animal rescue organization in Debbie's name.

This is such a shock to know that Debbie is gone. My heart felt sympathy goes out to her sisters and brother for losing your baby sister much too soon. To Nicole, your Mom was in awe and so proud of you. Sometimes she would say "Nicole is so smart, but I don't have any idea where she gets it from." Debbie sat next to me in Miss Leach's Spanish classes. With her warmth and laughter it was easy to gravitate towards her friendship. Sorry I'm so late with this posting, but I'm not on FB nor living in Monterey. I was getting ready to send her a Christmas card, but instead I'll look to the heavens and find her bright star....

Debbie loved animals. She loved watching the hummingbirds that visited her yard.I ran into her often at Nobb Hill where she and I purchased a lot of plants (as well as groceries). She told me one day about a hanging succulent called an October Plant. The hummingbirds, she reported, were all over it when it bloomed. It was not available at the time she told me about it.When I attempted to order one Julie (the florist there) said that she had just placed the last plant order allowed before the store folded.I am on a mission now to acquire an October Plant and enjoy it in memory of Debbie.

I met Debbie in school (she was in my graduating class at PGJHS), although I don't remember what year. I do remember her smile, her bright spirit, her sassiness, her humor. In recent years, we connected on Facebook, and we had many private FB conversations about life and politics, animals and our love of sanddabs. I was supposed to call her when I came into town, and we would go to the Golden Tee and eat sanddabs, but alas, family obligations always seemed to take priority. A sad lesson not to put off these types of meetings. I wish I could have sat with her, and caught up on the years since high school. My condolences to the family and close friends. She was a lovely person.

Debbie and I became friends in my freshman year at PG High School. 47 years of shared joy and pain. Memories flood the brain, from sleepovers, her mother's incredible Mac and Cheese, our weddings, the births of our children, our time together at the Herald, our love of paranormal activity and our shared love of animals. I was shocked when Debbie wasn't yet on Facebook and tried to talk her into signing up. She was resistant so I used her computer to sign into my account and soon after got the friend request from her. The rest is history. Debbie reached out and made connections with so many people and was the administrator of a Pacific Grove website. She was very passionate about her hometown. Debbie's presence will be sorely missed but her impact on our lives will reside in us forever.

Deb', Deb', Deb', I am crushed and devestated, we became fast friends via FB in spite of just missing each other at our beloved PG High--our love of PG's residential architecture, the arts and our common interest (some would say my obsession) in local PG gal Nancy Gross (aka 20th century fashion-icon Slim Keith) drew us first together as fans, and then what would lay the foundation for a deep friendship... 'am so very grateful we got to have lunch together at Fandango's in 2016. So long dear friend, til we see each other again <3 A.S. PGHS '80, San Diego

I can't believe your gone my friend. I will always cherish the time we went to Vegas to visit Renee. FB will never be the same without you. Although we didn't really know each other very well in HS, over these past several years we had become pretty close. I will miss you my friend.

Even though we have been "Facebook" friends for only 3 years I have grown to love Debbie. Only met her in person once but that 20 minute conversation was the start of a great friendship -- will miss her Facebook posts & the messages she sent me while I recuperate from my hosiptal stays. RIP Debbie -- I will never forget you. Gary L. Page
