Velda Jean Burke Bloodworth was born on June 28, 1929 in Spartanburg county SC to parents Lloyd Ernest Burke and Nora McNeal Burke. Her early years were spent in Michigan. When she was 14 years old the family moved to Key West for a year. She really enjoyed the Key West lifestyle and had many fond memories of that time. The family then moved to the central Florida area where she graduated from Forest Lake Academy in 1947. Jean attended Southern Missionary College in Tennessee but quit to accept a job teaching church school in Saint Petersburg, Florida where she met Clifford Bloodworth. They were married on August 14, 1949 in the Forest Lake Academy chapel. Jean and Cliff settled in Saint Petersburg where their older daughter Jill was born, then a year or so later moved to Forest City where daughter Jackie was born.
In the mid 1960's Jean went back to Southern Missionary College and completed her degree, graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She received her Master in Library Science degree from Florida State University in 1968 and in the fall of that year begin her career as librarian at Forest Lake Academy in Forest City, Florida. In 1974 she became Reference Librarian and Associate Professor at Rollins College and retired from there over 25 years later.
She loved reading, spending time with her grandkids and hosting picnics and holiday gatherings at her home on Bear Lake. She always said since she was fortunate to live on a lake she should share it with others!
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Clifford Bloodworth, brothers John Taylor Burke who was killed in the battle of Tarawa in 1943 and Kenneth I Burke.
She is survived by sisters Darlene Burke Ward of GA, Beverly McNeal Huff (Don) of MI, daughters Jill Henderson (Michel) of CO, Jackie Herschberger (Rick) of Forest City, grandchildren Missy Chick (Andrew) of CO, Katie Jean Guerrero (Nathan) of CO), Peter Herschberger of Forest City, one great grandson Declan McNeal Chick of CO

Mrs Bloodworth was hired at FLA to take care of books but her real gift was making each one of us students feel special. I didn't realize until now that the specialness I received from her was shared by all of us students.
I look forward to seeing her again on the resurrection day!
