Julian B. Stevens, Jr., former States Attorney, dies
Julian “Joe” Basil Stevens, Jr., passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Lake Ogleton on October 29, 2017, at the age of 85. He was the only child of Julian Basil Stevens, Sr. and Elizabeth Taylor Stevens. Joe was a native Annapolitan and was raised on the South River in Annapolis. He graduated from Annapolis High School, where he played Varsity Football and Lacrosse. He attended the University of Maryland and received an undergraduate degree and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Joe was also an avid lacrosse player, playing all four years and “Lettering” in Varsity Lacrosse. Joe went on to earn a Juris Doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law.
After receiving his JD, Joe joined the United States Air Force as a procurement officer and was stationed in Morocco and Libya. While in the Air Force, he received an Air Force Commendation Medal. He continued his service with the Maryland Air National Guard in the Judge Advocate General Corps after completing his active duty commitments and retired as a full Colonel.
When Joe returned to Annapolis from active duty, he pursued his own private law practice. After successfully establishing his practice, he became the States Attorney for Anne Arundel County in 1967 and served a four year term. He returned to private practice after serving the State and was a member of Maryland Criminal Defense Attorneys’ Association. During his career, he received the United States Meritorious Service Medal from President Ronald Reagan, the Maryland Distinguished Service Medal, and the Maryland Meritorious Service Medal. After a successful legal career of more than 30 years, he retired from private practice.
Joe enjoyed coaching youth sports, boating, fishing, traveling and spending quality time with his family. He was a lifetime member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry. He was a long time member of the Eastport Yacht Club.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of almost 32 years, Carol Sue Stevens, and his daughter, Marianne Forrest and her husband Stuart, sons, Julian B. Stevens, III and his wife Susan, Michael Stevens and his wife Regine, Julian “Joey” B. Stevens, IV and his wife Amanda, and 10 grandchildren.
