Marilyn Allen Gordon passed peacefully at her apartment in Alexandria on Wednesday 11/1/2017. She was 90.
She was born and raised in Lynchburg, VA. She was very fond of and lifelong friends with many families from the neighborhood in Lynchburg where she grew up. She attended and graduated from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA.
She married Robert Harrison Gordon on Saturday 11/25/1950. She taught primary public school in Orange, VA and then in Annandale, VA for several years until her children were born. She taught remedial reading to inmates at the Lorton Reformatory for six years.
After her children were grown, she taught creative writing to second graders at The Primary Day School in Bethesda, MD for more than 15 years. She used an extensive, evocative curriculum for this class that she developed herself.
She was a longtime member of the Little River United Church of Christ in Annandale. She loved reading, children's stories, fairy tales, and cats and dogs. She was a patron of the arts, and she loved visiting the art galleries in downtown Washington.
She is survived by her children, Susan Churchill Gordon Rosen of Falls Church (VA) and Robert Harrison Gordon Jr of Palmyra (VA), and her granddaughter Hannah Louise Rosen. She was preceded in her passing by her husband Robert Harrison Gordon and her brother Maurice James Allen Jr.
She will be interred at Aquia Episcopal Church in Stafford, VA.
