Melba Irene Bruce, 92, passed away Saturday, November 4, 2017. She was born May 25, 1925 in Drumwright, OK to parents, Homer & Edna Legan.
Melba moved to Texas with her family in 1949. She was an Executive Secretary with Exxon, and retired from there after 30 years of service. She was a long time member of the First Methodist Church Adelphi Class. Melba was active in many different community activities. She was the last original member of the Shepard Park Plaza Garden Club. Melba was also an avid hunter and fisher, which she enjoyed doing with her family.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Alton Hammons Bruce, brother, Vincent Legan; as well as her parents. Melba is survived by her daughter, Mary "Polly" Phillips; son, Robert Bruce (Alisa); grandchildren, Kevin Mitchell Phillips (Victoria), and Ryan Patrick Bruce (Sydney); great-granddaughter, Kayla Anneliese Phillips; Brother. Robert Loren Legan; sisters & brother in-law, Vera Stephens, Faye Bruce, and Dossie Bruce (Affie).

I met Melba in 2005 when I joined Oasis book club. Melba adored our grandson, Trent, when he came to book club as an infant and toddler. We have wonderful memories and were very Blessed to have known Melba.

Melba joined the OASIAS Book Group in January 2003. She was a valued member and active participant. She was also a cherished friend to many of her neighbors in Shepherd Park Plaza and in the surrounding communities. Melba's smile and warm, dignified presence will be missed by many. The Oasis Book Group plans to donate a book in her memory to the Houston Public Library.

Melba was a founder of the SPP Garden Club, a dedicated long time member. Her presence will be missed greatly. We were fortunate to have had her in our lives and we will remember her with great warmth and admiration. Fondly, her friends in the Shepherd Park Plaza Garden Club.
