Sarah Phillips Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2017.

Sarah Beale Phillips passed away on September 11, 2017 at her home in Olympia, WA. She was born in Seattle, WA on July 30, 1952 to James and Jane Beale. During her school years Sarah was called Sally by her family and friends. She attended Laurelhurst Elementary, Nathan Eckstein Junior High, and Roosevelt High schools, but spent her senior year in Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from Churchill Area High School in Pittsburgh in 1970. Sarah graduated from the University of Washington, Phi Beta Kappa, with a degree in History, and attended the University of Washington Law School. She spent most of her working career as a program coordinator at Children's Hospital and Medical Center, and as a research coordinator at the University of Washington in various departments. She retired in 2013 from King County Metro and moved to Olympia. Her family and friends will hold Sarah's memory in their hearts forever. They remember her humor and her joyful laughter, her perceptive intelligence, and her passion for justice. She had a generous and kind heart, and created beautiful gardens at her home that reflected her gentle, loving spirit. She is deeply missed. Sarah's beloved son, John Kavanaugh Costello, preceded her in death, as did her parents, James and Jane Beale. She is survived by her sisters Eleanor Harrison and Harriet Beale, her nephew Peter Kerrick, and her nieces Mary Wilson, Beth Orler, and Bonnie Verwey, as well as by four great-nephews and a great-niece. Services will be private. Those who wish may donate in Sarah's memory to the ASPCA or to land conservation activities. Arrangements with Funeral Alternatives of Washington.
