Dick attended the Naval Academy during the war years and graduated in June 1945, with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Engineering and was commissioned as Ensign, U.S. Navy. In March 1947, Dick married Elizabeth Ann Lynch in Washington, D.C. He served for three years of sea duty in the Navy and entered Naval flight training in Pensacola, Florida, receiving his Navy wings in November 1949. He served as a fighter pilot in Fighter Squadron Seventy Three at Quonset Point, R.I. For twenty years Dick served on active duty with the Navy in various assignments and retired as a Lieutenant Commander on July 1, 1965. After retirement from the Navy, the Daly family moved to Mercer Island, Washington., where he was employed by the Boeing Company. For the following nineteen years, until his retirement in 1984, he worked as an engineer and later as a flight test engineer on the Boeing AWACS Sentry program. Following the death of his wife, Elizabeth Ann Lynch, in 1968, he married Mary Alice Hood in 1976. Dick and Mary had seasonal residences in and around the Phoenix area from the early 1980s and had purchased a home in Rio Verde, Arizona in 1997. They moved permanently to Rio Verde in late 2004.
